According to a new study by the Citizen Science project Darwin’s Ark, a dog’s breed dictates only 9% of its behavior, challenging breed stereotypes. NBC News’ Joshua Johnson is joined by senior author of the study Dr. Elinor Karlsson to discuss her findings.

You mean I can get a Shiba Inu with the mind of a Golden retriever?
hi! i found you by searching mental health. may is national mental health awareness month. would you be interested in doing a collab with me on that topic?
There are no horror stories about labradors (00:32). This is fake news.
9% does not make a terrier Rat better than a Samoyed. Their behavior is dictated greatly by their breed, which is why they were bred for certain things. Choose a high strung breed like a Chihuahua and you're much more likely to get bitten, even as an owner, than say, a Husky. There are lots of factors, intelligence, overbreeding, inbreeding, how close or far from the mean (Canus Lupus) is a particular Canus Domesticus, but you can rely on certain breeds to have certain behaviors and personalities. Take Maremmas. Extremely kind, gentle, and affectionate, they are fiercely protective of their property and their charges. Be that little human babies or ducks or cats or whatever you set them to take care of. Place a Rottweiller in the same job, teach them, train them, and spend lots of professional time showing them the ropes and you still might have a dead duck or two or a mauled kid, especially when Rotties get to be about five or six and are up in age. They just go bad far more often than other dogs. The numbers don't lie. I'd trust a Pit Bull with my kids over a Rottweiller any day of the week and Pitbulls can break bones with their jaws. Dogs have been bred for temperament. And even under the most professional Skinneresque Pavlovian certified dog trainer trained animals, I'll stick to black or white labs over brown or golden (incredibly dumb), and I would never own a Rottie. Shepherds are a mixed bag. Short hair are smarter, the newer batch of long haired German Shepherds are less intelligent and more apt to bite. Then again, the Belgian malinois are temperamental and dangerous around children. 9% That's a pretty big 9% if that's all you're using to predict behavior that is proven repeatedly worldwide.
I've had pit bulls and labs and chihuahuas…… the only one that's ever bitten me is the chihuahua..
Dog. This is the comment what got me 20 likes
Woof Woof says my dog in agreement while watching this video.
A dog isn't aware of its breed. Dogs have the amazing ability to love no matter what! I have 2 APBTs and they are the most precious dogs. I've had Rottweilers, a German Shepard, mutts, and a Border Collie. Each dog had its own personality but ALL of them were well behaved and extremely sweet no matter their breed.
Vegan dogs are the smartest and live the longest. I have seen the difference between them before and after dietary changes. Feeding dead animals to our pets is as stupid as humans eating animals
Far too many variables.
Dogs are the best people.
woof
Everyone knows breeds exist just like race.
Some dogs are smarter than others.
Stronger, faster just like different races have different qualities.
Everyone deep down knows this but it’s politically incorrect so they remain silent.
People are stupid, breeds don't dictate temperament.
ANYONE who breeds dogs KNOW this. DUH
In ONE LITTER ALONE you can have a variety of personalities, traits, attitudes.
JUST LIKE WITH HUMANS colors, races, origins don't make their behavior pre-set. Nature and nurture are what makes any animal.
Ruff ruff
Go to any shelter. There will be a higher level of pit bulls than all the other dogs. When people actually realize that pit bulls can't be controlled in attack situations they dump them.
Shouldve done personality by size instead of breed. theyd find all little dogs think they own the world.
A Golden Retriever will back off in an aggressive situation. A pit bull won't. And they can't be stopped.
Breeds that are bred to be aggressive and vicious are more likely to be aggressive and vicious. I'm looking at you pitbulls.
Did not see the name of the reporter. He did a very good interview.
Props for having the actual scientist come explain the results.
There are difference within each breed as well. Have you ever seen what an English Lab looks like compared to a skinny American lab? I had an English lab for many years, he was my bestie for over a decade. Even he was weirded out by the more hyper and scrawnier American labs. But one thing all labs I’ve ever seen are all into…SWIMMING. 💦 🎾
Uma coleira de cachorro foi colocada ao lado de um pote de ração. Eles se conheceram e tiveram um belíssimo relacionamento homossexual. Uma boa história para um livro infantil. Os democratas gostariam disso.
