Education crisis in Los Angeles: Students experiencing homelessness increased by 19 percent

Students experiencing homelessness in the Los Angeles Unified School District increased by nearly 19 percent from the school year ending in 2023 to the full school year prior, according to the district. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho says he believes these numbers are just the “tip of the iceberg”. Stephanie Gosk shares the story of 14-year-old freshman Vanessa and the challenges her family has faced without a permanent home. Carvalho says education is the only ticket to break the cycle of homelessness.

  1. Perhaps she should go to Mexico and cross the border illegally …. She won’t be homeless.

  2. Just call yourself an unvetted migrant. California will give you housing.

  3. The city, county, state, and federal government: 🤷🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️

Not unique here though. This is America. People care but the ones who can do anything about it move as slow as molasses in winter. America will not help you because then it’s viewed as a welfare handout, socialism or communism. We just cannot do anything to help you even if the resources and desire is there.

  4. America's first America first. All of these migrants these Biden Harris era migrants need to be shipped back to their Port of entry let Mexico sort them out.

  5. Minimum wage gets you 40,000 in los angeles working full time and to get an apartment you have to make minimum 60,000 to trow your money away in rotting buildings

  6. Demoncrats have ruined this country

  7. remember, your there for the grade and the paper, afterwards, take all that reference and have a big bonfire.

  8. In order for the rich to get richer the poor have to get poorer………Trump passed many bills giving monetary breaks to the rich. PLEASE VOTE BLUE……💙☮️🙏🇺🇸🤪

  9. You are NOT telling the whole story here. It is amateur reporting at best. NBC is giving bits of information here about the family so that we may feel sorry. The question begs. Where is the father? Where is the extended family? The family is the basis of the family. Answer those questions and than we can feel for this child. Venessa is NOT homeless. Than again if the above is not told, than we the people are not going to pass judgement. NBC is careless in doing a COMPLETE report here. It is AMATEUR reporting. It is elementary reporting.

  10. Vanessa is eating more than she requires

  11. Yeah, let's keep those borders open so that things could get a lot worse!!!

  12. Leave California that’s the best thing you can do for yourself and your family

  13. Oh, please. The real reason LAUSD continues to churn out garbage is that nobody wants to be there to learn. More than 50% of the students are struggling to pass Algebra.

  14. I totally agree with that. Also theft in the stores. .. unfortunately they get away with it.. some stores get hit hard.. these kids need the have the strength. Faith .and hope.

  15. Vanessa, don’t give up! You’re brave for being there for your family. You’re going to accomplish great things in life! ❤️🙏🏻

  16. the ruling party has ruined the state.

  17. Superintendent Carvalho is great. He was our superintendent at Miami Dade County Public Schools. I think a novel idea might be to convert some schools into boarding schools.

  18. Wait I thought the economy was doing well, and people were being successful? You mean Biden's america is failing?

  19. Heartbreaking, don’t give up Vanessa, you got this, focus on school! If life knocks you down, never give up, faith, family and education!

  20. GO CARVALHO!!! -former mdcps student

  21. Voting for Democrats is a form of suicide.

  22. Why do people have kids if they don’t take care of them?
