It’s worth remembering that America gets nothing from its alliance with Israel.
The extreme right wing government of Netanyahu in Israel does not make America any more secure, they do not contribute anything significant or meaningful to americas security. In reality Israel’s apartheid policies have failed. Netanyahu is corrupt and he has failed. He has the blood of Israelis on his hands.
With time everyone knows that Israel will prevail but this will happen again and again and again in the years to come. In this case Mossad the much vaunted Israeli secret service failed. Israel was taken completely by surprise and this abject failure has directly contributed to the deaths of at least 300 Israelis and in the coming day it is reasonable to expect that at least 3,000 Palestinians will die.
There is absolutely no benefit for America in supporting Israel.

I don't think it's just an intelligence failure. I also think the Israelis got lulled into a false sense of security when their Iron Dome was shooting down most of the Hamas or Hezbollah rockets. It's like the Israeli military was focused on the skies, but weren't looking ground level at guys on the ground cutting through or bulldozing the border fence.
USA was oblivious, too busy focused on getting Donald Trump.
