Florida residents say insurance struggles from Hurricane Ian persist

Months after Hurricane Ian hit Florida, insurance companies are being accused of shortchanging homeowners with severely damaged properties. Independent adjusters tell NBC News that after they’ve gone out, assessed damage and filed a report, their work is being changed in order to pay policyholders less. Now, Florida’s Department of Financial Services is investigating possible fraud. Lester Holt speaks to residents about their struggles.

  1. We can send $90 billion to Ukraine and cannot help Americans who need help? Biden must go.

  2. Best advice. "Do not move to FL". It's become too expensive now plus the home insurances are astronomically high, look somewhere else. No grandpas or LGBTQ+ welcome anymore.

  3. Buy small, live small. These insurance companies can not be trusted. Put money in your emergency account/investment accounts.

  4. Why bother paying insurance while they don’t pay out much or anything?

  5. Fact: DeSantis received $$$$ donation from Insurance Association of Florida.
FL. Home insurance is the highest in the nation yet DeSantis won't investigate.

  6. More proof that the US insurance industry needs to be fixed (or reworked) from the ground up

  7. This isn't surprising. Insurance companies are not here to protect you. They are here to take your money and leave you high and dry. Doug Quinn is amazing and we need more people like him around to help keep these insurance companies accountable. #downwithstatefarm

  8. He forgot the part about Florida not allowing contractors to come in and work so the ones here are charging three to four times the amount for the same labor no competition

  9. And yet whats Ron DeSantis doing? Culture war garbage. I can't say I feel sorry for folks in Florida, you voted the trash in and he's not interested in helping people, I sure hope those drag show cancelations offer shelters for all these people because that's all Ron has fought for. And with women being denied abortions housing demands are only going to go up!

  10. The light at the end of the tunnel is a fire

  11. And with high cost of construccion now that u have no inmigrants 😂 gonna be imposible …Ron desaster😂 WANTS EVERY CONSTRUCTOR TO EARN $50 $60 DOLLARS /HR INSTEAT $20/ TO $25/HR MAJE YOURE MATH OF THE COST TO BIULD OR REBIULD 😂

  12. Whassamatter … Florida governor just being a spectator to the human misery of its residents?

  13. The people of Florida are still going through the damage of Ian and it's state governor prancing around and waisting tax payers money to continue his vile agenda

  14. Florida deserves no help on any front until they get rid of DeSantis. Fraud is what they have voted for, and so fraud is what they get.

  15. 😂😂😂move near water. And dont get flood insurance. Even on high land Florida get all kinds of insurance 😂😂😂 even Alligator insurance never know 😂😂😂

  16. Governor & legislature may get to work on insurance reform after they get all the mileage they can out of disney and wokeness.

  17. … so all the book banning & hatred against everyone by Ron DeSatan isn't fixing homes.!

  18. How many feet above sea level are these expensive to insure homes ?

  19. Similar thing happening to my grandparents. They moved down there approximately 5 years ago and bought a place at a trailer park near their friends. Now they’re living with my dad and their friends have all moved away and aren’t moving back. They want to go back down for medical care, but my father and I have objected, but they’re still in their mid 70’s and are still capable of living on their own so we can’t legally stop them. I know many more have it soooo much worse, but I feel the effects of Ian to this day. A good chunk of the family heirlooms are gone, my grandfather’s retirement investments gone, thank god both of them worked for the Feds when they were younger.

  20. The Florida GOP is completely owned by the Insurance companies 😂

  21. That’s what you get when you live in stupid republican states. They would say the same thing about people on the west coast.

  22. If Ron would get his one track tiny little mind out of peoples panties yall might get him to do something for his constituents. But I doubt it.

  23. Until florida voters recognize climate change as a REAL issue, NO MORE FEDERAL FUNDING FOR HURRICANE RELIEF.

  24. I'm sorry but you all put your faith in the wrong people. The Republican party will not even try to make things right for you all. I'm sorry for you all, I really am. I hope somehow you can start over.

  25. Pray harder and keep voting ❤️

  26. Superstorm Sandy exposed the many problems with insurance companies, including flood so this is sadly not a surprise with a catastrophic storm like Ian. Anyone moving to Florida needs to realize what they could be up against. What happened to this couple could happen to anyone.

  27. NO FEDERAL SUBSIDIES FOR FLOOD INSURANCE

  28. This is DeSantis's Florida . Fraud is now normalized in Florida.

  29. DeSantis has been paid well to look into this matter! I hear he's gotta multi million dollar plan to kidnap asylum seekers to sort things out.

  30. Pay God his tithe!
    And it will stop

  31. The people and the state of Florida will get no mercy! They deserve it!!

  32. Hmmm… who could have ever seen this coming 😂🤣

  33. Rookie mistake by the Cliffords to not have flood insurance when they were in a flood prone area, but insurance companies are also being ridiculous. The roof damage was most likely caused by air, not food, and what they paid them wasn't enough even for just the roof

  34. "Insurance", itself, is the greatest scam of modern times.

  35. for those that vote Republican I say tough chit – you get what you voted for… for the poor people with brains that don't vote Republican – I am sorry
