Former USS George Washington Sailor Speaks Out About Suicides Among Ship Crew Members

The Navy is making urgent changes to better support sailors on the USS George Washington after a cluster of suicides; five in the past year and three in the span of one week this month. Nautica Robinson, a former sailor from the ship, tells NBC News’ Kate Snow about what she says was toxic management and poor working conditions. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. » Subscribe to NBC News: http://nbcnews.to/SubscribeToNBC

  1. Disgusting not helping these veterans no excuses 😤

  2. The rich gouges the military the most no xtra money for reg.sailors

  3. It is not the job. It is more than that. It is the work environment and branch culture. If you are not a freemason, you don't matter. Freemasonry is not for everyone and a lot of people do not believe in it even though they try to push it on you. They tell you, that you won't get promoted or advance in your career if you don't become one. Old freemasonary is gone and these newbies are abusing it now. There is also a big leadership problem too. Leaders are not being held accountable. Their buddies are overlooking things as a freemason favor. That is wrong! It is a combination of things that need to be fixed.

  4. If you have a human mission to Mars. You will want potted plants throughout the ship. Not only to give you oxygen, but to ground you back to Earth in the middle of no-where.

  5. Imagine if you can place some potted trees through out the ship (with adequate light). Just looking at a tree can ground you back to Earth. When you walk through a town with no trees vs a town with trees, you just feel different. One feel alienated and cold the other feels warm and at home.

  6. I am the LORD Jesus Christ in tHis second coming. I am creating the North American UNION. And I will make sure morale remains healthy and that life is satisfying while addressing cowardice and emotional disabilities.

  7. Man, that's heartbreaking. My CO requested to visit me when I checked myself into psychiatric hospital. His gesture put me a little bit more at ease. I declined his visit. Instead, I had my chaplain and company Master Chief visit me.

  8. Be grateful for all these young men and women severing the country. Away from home, training routine everyday, and stuck on the sea with nothing for months are hard for anyone, but I'm guessing that's not the main reason for those who took their own life. And I hope the higher ranks in the navy should stop the type of thought that "I've been through worse time and I'm going to make you noobies suffer as well". Disciplines are needed for order, but not bullying. Navy should implement policy and procedures to identify the problems and help the sailors.

  9. If someone’s sick mentally they should receive help – perhaps they thought she had a case of the “ITIS”

  10. E-4 and below should be entitled to BAH.

  11. All of us have to fight through it, with everything we have plus more!

  12. When I was on a Aircraft Carrier and we went into the shipyard for a major overhaul we all transferred to a medical ship that was overhauled for us to live on and we just went to work every morning on the carrier but not still live on the carrier. I see people who join the military for the benifits of things like college but when some kind of war breaks out they get all out of sorts and they forget their primary job of the military which is to serve this country first and foremost. Some people have cush jobs but when they are required to do something out of the norm this becomes the result but I had to do things like painting, lay tile and even go on fire watches for the welders in the shipyard and none of this was my primary job. Some people are not mentally ready to serve in the military and when I was on a carrier they never had women on them like they do now because of the time frame carriers stay out at sea they served on smaller ships that came into homeport more often. It's not like anyone is stuck on a carrier 24 hrs a day because I would have to be at work a 6:30 AM to maybe 3 or 3:30 and if I didn't have duty I could leave the shipyard and go out as long as I was at work on time unless things have drastically changed.

  13. just let them smoke weed

  14. This is exactly why the medical core should be separated from the military and be free to act on its own without military interference. The military has a history of medical cover ups. The VA should also be separated from any military control, meaning no prior military leaders involved in any level of activity. Honesty can only be achieved without the influence of distorted power goals of the elite.

  15. No disrespect to the family and to that lady. I guess not all are cut in the same cloth. If that was her mindset, she should have sign up in chair force not in Navy or Marines.

  16. This generation is weak minded little babies. If they can't get a 'participation trophy' at the end of every day…they start cracking up.
Go tell it to the Marines.

  17. Low morale is US problem too..will see in any future war who is having low morale US or Russia.. idiots in power in both countries apparently doesn't care..that is problem everywhere.. power corrupt absolutely..NBC should understand this when communicating about Russian troop morale in Ukrainian war..

  18. The same is happening at shore duty commands, especially when manning is low.

  19. there are people who are mentally ill. mentally ill people shouldn't serve in military, or any thing that can hurt others. what seems to be the problem>?

  20. Master Chief Russell Smith is a piece of crap and has no right to be in any leadership position. So instead of giving any kind of help to those who are asking for it on a ship that just went through three suicides he tells them to toughen up it could be worse. What a failure of leadership. This seriously needs to be addressed and he needs to be fired!!!

  21. Did tours on cv64 and cvn65. Did shipyard period with cvn65 in newport news after completing world cruise from alemeda. The navy is hard work. Shipyard work sucked but it was down time compared to sea duty. There should be resources for people who need them but the navy's not for everybody. I believe the theodore roosevelt did a ten month cruise with no port visits due to covid

  22. I think we all know the men running the American Military are abusive and mal adjusted.

  23. When you are in the military the government owns you. Just as they do a truck, plane, a boat, ect.. When things need to be done they use you (manpower) to get it done. I'm prior military had to do may projects and duties not related to my job afsc. That is simply the way things are. I don't think this individual will ever be able to work anywhere she does not seem capable of handling diversity. Which is a must in the military.

  24. You need Jesus in your life to overcome the situation of mental health of suicides.

  25. I was in a land based Navy Squadron in the first half of the 1970s. I remember a career enlisted guy went home on leave when we were overseas and committed suicide. He was a great guy. You just never know what is going on in someone’s head.

  26. The military is not for everybody. Once you are 18 as a male you have to signup for the draft.

  27. Many of you have valid things to say. But, please check your spelling.

  28. We need stronger background checks before we allow people unfit and unstable to join our military. It's not for most a strong background check to not allow the weak to join is key.

  29. I know not the individual circumstances, but I know suicide. It’s based on conditions. Sometimes it’s as trivial as not having a clean bed to rest or in some scenarios the lack of funds to support oneself. Trustees have been especially discouraged from what I can see. Usually they are considered most vulnerable not necessarily for suicide but either behavioral problems or overall dissatisfaction with their conditions. At times like that, typically it is kindness that matters most. Whether outreach be material or something emotional, spiritual, it is the function of the cloth.
