China issue is at the forefront of this election, but it shouldn’t be for people living on the island. Many social and economic issues are neglected and left unresolved by current and former administrations and should be the focus of this election.
Taiwan is not a U.S. territory. Taiwan is China. Taiwan will go the same way Honk Kong did. No U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund weapons, salaries, humanitarian aid nor reconstruction to Taiwan in a proxy war against China. No U.S. draft re-instated for using Taiwan in a proxy war against China. No U.S. naval fleet patrolling Taiwan. If Taiwan doesn't tell The West to leave Taiwan alone, Taiwan will end up looking like destroyed Ukraine and soon-to-be destroyed Isreal. Taiwan needs to unify with China because its economic future will be much brighter aligning with China than if it aligned with The West.
There's no country called Taiwan, you're thinking of the Republic of China.
Xi Jing Ping already expressed very clearly his vision for unification of Communist China with Taiwan. Double speak Chinese style, to unite with military force if possible, otherwise politically.

Chinese government's attitude change towards a more expansionist and aggressive stance plays a huge role in how these generational divide in Taiwan are formed. For boomers, most of them either came with Chiang in 1949, or are the children of those who came. Thus, they typically have a more friendly attitude towards China.
For younger GenX, and millennials, they saw the democratization of Taiwan in 1996, and China's military intimidation, as well as diplomatic manipulation against Taiwan on the world stage. I still remember China prevented aids from reaching Taiwan after the 921 earthquake (where 2,400+ killed), and prevented Taiwan's participation in WHA during SARS in 2004.
For GenZ, they saw Xi's rise to power, and even more military engagement to intimidate Taiwan.
So of course the younger generation is going to be more keen on the idea of a standalone Taiwan (a la status quo), than a reunification with China.

China’s recent history of illegal wars, occupations, regime change, and proxy wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen, are indeed a cause for concern.
It's not really the generation devide, but Chinese immigrants to Taiwan after WWII without proper knowledge of what the world is like. They usually lack of language skills nor had the chance to communicate with orhers outside their circle. Similar to first generation of Chinese Americans.
Look at the unrest and crackdown in Hong Kong.

Nobody wants to be part of China. Not even the Chinese. This is not an opinion, but fact. Just follow the money and children. The very first chance the Chinese get and both their money and children are out of the country. China is clearly considered a lovely place to live, invest and raise children.
