Growing job scams amid layoff wave

With many companies having layoffs, more Americans are turning to employment websites to look for new job opportunities. However, in the first three quarters of 2022, the Federal Trade Commission received 70,000 job scam reports with a loss of $250 million dollars. Knowing that scammers are posting fake jobs to steal people’s information, legitimate job sites are fighting back. NBC News’ Rehema Ellis hears from experts on what to look out for.

  1. Just recently had Indian scammers ask for my SSN, DOB and full name to “submit me to a job req” yeah okay. Watch out guys, it’s rough out here

  2. Living under capitalism is being yelled at by your employer that if you’re not happy get a new job and then looking for a new job and having your identity or something stolen because we can’t have anything nice without another 10 people trying to scan their way into money just like every other millionaire billionaire.

  3. I believe blue-collar job scams are even worse, such as restaurant jobs

  4. People are getting laid off and scammers are seeing this as an opportunity to attack the vulnerable at their lowest point. Boy there are some nasty characters on this earth

  5. I was almost a victim of this back in 2014. They actually used a real company's website and pretended to be the people listed on the website as HR and management. I figured it out when they sent me a check without even doing a background check on me. I told my bank to verify the check before depositing it on Friday. When I went back to the bank on Monday, they told me it was fraudulent. The scammer was not giving up either. When I told him I knew the check was fraudulent, he called me a liar and accused me of theft. They really go all in when they do these things. I contacted the company and they were aware of the scam and were working with the FBI to find these people. I reported everything and the whole situation was really sad. The local PD were useless. They told me not to even pursue it. Glad yall are spreading awareness. This was a job listing on Indeed.

  6. The scammers are not sophisticated at all yes things may look legit but nobody and I mean absolutely nobody in the history of the world has had to pay to get a job the job pays us so as soon as any jobs okay you got to pay for this to get the job you know it's not a job it's a scam. The end

  7. Biden’s policies to destroy America are working

  8. "The scammed have become Soooo sophisticated!" I mean… not really.. all they did was ask for photos of the front and back of your I.D. along with the front and back of your debit/credit card, why would you be giving that information to someone who you've never even SEEN in person before??

  9. NO one should be taking your ID or info, until you are hired and in the building.

  10. SurveyMonkey is scam just to get you to take a survey

  11. ya i got scammed before, finally they said something about!

  12. I’m surprised how linked and indeed allow this to happen, these sites are supposed to be creditable

  13. Watch out for Aerotek

  14. I stopped using linkedin a long time ago because it was obvious. They also need to do same.for bad temp agencies.

  15. I nearly got scammed, they used a real company, had multiple people etc.. but I thought something was fishy. So I told the woman I was instead going to apply directly on the businesses website. She panicked and tried to stop me 🤣

  16. Same thing happened to me, and I've had trouble trusting job listings on any website. Even paid to use FlexJobs because I was sick of the scams and difficulty finding a legitimate job and not lose my identity in the process. I am still jobless.

  17. This thing is happening a lot lately specially on LinkedIn I get 5 to 10 "job offers" a week, be aware they actually go and check the job postings of legit companies and come to you as a third party recruiting, if you are not talking to the company hiring directly don't do it.

Also indeed most of them are from India where scam call centers are a very common thing. Also don't give any too personal information to nobody until you get an offer letter from the actual company, like from a legit email and you have the right to request confirmation of identity from the potential employer, you cant never be cautious enough.

Lastly but not the least important even giving your resume to this scammers is dangerous, most of them are just collecting data on you to either build fake job profile applicants for their own teams to take the job from india or to scam you or get access to your personal stuff in other ways, the more they know about you the more vulnerable you become to get your personal accounts breached in some way.

  18. this ain't nothing , i got credit card skim out of thousands … that's more worrying cause u don't know it until yr money is gone

  19. People I know didn’t give out any personal information beyond name and email. No jobs taken either. Scam of buying gift cards. All nearly scammed but didn’t fall for it.
