Fusion power is a decade away or less, not "decades." Also, the Wright Brothers built the first military aircraft; they didn't just prove that flight could be done. The military very much within their lifetimes had them designing and building aircraft for use in war, not as experiments to prove it might be possible decades later. Literally most human technology might be running on fusion produced energy within our lifetimes; it might even fulfill Nicolai Tesla's vision of free power for everyone, where the only limit to what you can do will be your imagination and ingenuity.
It would be really 'nice' if when you have a report on a major innovation in science that you had an actual scientist or science historian there to talk about it. They're at literally any college. Whatever college is closest, ask to speak to a science historian, physicist, or engineer. I don't mean to throw shade at you newsreaders, but you're not informing us by poking the mysterious object with sticks and telling us what you think it might be. There are experts in abundance you could have on for five minutes about this technology and what it means in reality rather than your science fiction fantasy guesses.
And why can't it take up three football fields? Have you ever seen a current power plant of any kind? It's a lot bigger than three football fields. An oil tanker is bigger than three football fields, a refinery is bigger than that, a nuclear plant. Seriously, why are you talking out of your butt?

The creation of energy from nuclear fusion may not produce any greenhouse gases, but what about the helium that it DOES produce? Is that a useful byproduct?..
..for what? Has this question been asked and answered and a determination about what to do with the created helium already been made; or has the question of sustainability even been a part of the discussion? Is anyone thinking that far ahead?
Part of the reason that Fusion is always "decades in the future" is cause journalist always hype the results.
What happened is that scientist have broken 'then next link on the chain to sustainable/profitable fusion'.
Its still decades away but slowly but surely its getting there.
