The protocol for the passing of a Head of State or Queen is very well defined. As the Queen of England, Elizabeth was known worldwide. As such, anyone less than the head of state would be considered a breach of protocol. Simply bad manners.

King Edward VIII abdicated after he tried very hard but failed to have his lady Ms Simpson accepted as his Queen consort. His request should have been tolerated and accepted and he would have remained as King and the course of history would have been very different from now.
I think Prince Charles should not be crowned King as he not only had an affair with the wife of his good friend during his marriage with Princess Diana, but he then married her after her "arranged" divorce from her then husband. Prince William should be made the next monarch. I'm no royalist but behaviour counts.
