Hakeem Jeffries boasted last night after the debt ceiling bill passed 314 yeas and 117 nea's. He made comments to the effect that democrats had taken back the house because of their 165 votes (Dems) vs republicans 149 showing the bill to pass with 314 votes. But these votes were possible because the clock went into overtime.
At the moment the clock ran to 0:00 the votes were: Republicans: 135, Democrats: 98 = 233 votes. Two hundred and eighteen votes were needed for this to pass. So in essence this bill passed with a majority of Republican votes. The Democrats piled on the votes after the clock ran out for boasting purposes and nothing more. Republicans are still in the majority.
