How Can The U.S. Adapt For An All-Electric Vehicle Future? Inside The Search For Charging Solutions

With 35 million electric vehicles expected on the road by 2030, experts say the U.S. will need to massively expand its charging infrastructure. A full charge can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours. NBC News’ Jacob Ward looks at some of the potential solutions, from charging stations in parking lots to robots swapping out a car’s entire battery. » Subscribe to NBC News: http://nbcnews.to/SubscribeToNBC

How Can The U.S. Adapt For An All-Electric Vehicle Future? Inside The Search For Charging Solutions

  1. Forget swapping. Additional infrastructure increases the cost per mile.

Right now a Tesla can add 175 miles in 20 minutes. (This will almost certainly improve.)

The US average daily drive is 35 miles. 175 / 35 = 5. An EV driver who couldn't plug in where they park for work, school, or at home would need to stop for 20 minutes about six times per month. We need rapid chargers where people grocery shop and where they go for quick meals and other short-stay destinations.

  2. Battery swapping is dumb. Firs,t it requires you to build many more battery packs than cars. But battery packs are the most expensive part of the car, and the limiting factor on the supply chain. Second, swapping stations are way, way more expensive than charging stations.

  3. As I see it, Cities and counties make it hard (fees and regulations) for a willing business to install any charge spots. Getting the 'pad' ready for the hardware is already expensive. Add all the hoops… Why bother, if they can not recover (charging reasonable fee to use) in a reasonable time. A single Level 2 charge point needs 50A of 240V. Small businesses may not have spare panel capacity: $$$$, then there is conduit (buried) and wire to the spot $$$. Required Environmental studies ?? (it is an existing parking spot, getting a power outlet!!) (a Home station is $700, so a heavy use station will go past $1K. WHY would a small business do this?
Having MANY small charg locations is the real solution, rather than a few big sites (Like Tesla has done because Super chargers need massive (more than major office buildings) power transformers).

  4. Different usage models are still needed. Driving till empty doesn't work if it takes almost an hour to recharge. You need a lot of designated parking slots, if cars are left there after charging is compleated. A lot of options, I wonder which one will win out?

  5. It is important that cross compatible cars all get the same connection. Not making it the car owners responsibility to carry an adapter for each different charging station…. Battery swapping should also be a big priority… this will also allow fast recycling of inefficient batteries….

  6. Watch Fox News they have live cameras at the southern border showing you what's really going on

  7. Ha.ha😂😂😂 people are breaking into the charging stations and stealing the copper. 😂😂😂.

  8. Battery swapping is an unnecessary bad idea. I've been driving used 2015 EVs for three and a half years, it's very possible. There's a lot of anti-ev disinformation, don't believe it.

  9. I can only afford a used EV but since the batteries in current EVs need to be replaced every 8-12 years at a cost of $6000+/- dollars I am reluctant to make the transition.

  10. Well, it's not practical. Period. I need a truck capable of pulling a boat, hauling a trailer, camping with a 5th wheel………. nothing electric would, or could accomplish this. Also, how do you produce electricity ? Right. Fossil fuel. Coal, natural gas, nuclear plant, etc……
Electric baby cars are practical maybe in the city environment where you commute a hundred miles a week or so…..

  11. Alert !! Secret Service, Supreme Court and DOJ are compromised!

The world has greater peril from those who tolerate evil, like the DOJ, than from Trump and his fellow insurrectionist! DOJ Garland is ending democracy by not prosecuting Trumpist.

Civil Contempt For Trump, But Trump Has Not Been Indicted
    1. the DOJ really wants to let Trump go
    2. DOJ Garland is afraid of what might happen to himself
    3. DOJ Garland is afraid to do his job and wants others to Pursue Trump in Civil Court

    DOJ Garland
promised to hold Trump insurrectionists accountable, but he has not for the insurrection leaders and he is not cooperating with all other justice departments.
Garlands plan is to wait out the clock so he can say, oh we just couldn't get to it in time or we would never have won the case.

    NY DA Bragg
Will not arrest trump for crimes his office has well documented.

    NY Judge
will a NY judge hold Trump on contempt charges? probably not

There are actually some brave people trying to punish Trump, but he is hard to reach.

we want accountability for the following –

    1. meadows doesnt appear in front of commission that is contempt of congress… doj wont arrest him is unethical. he didn't appear, what more evidence is needed? ……DOJ Failed
mark meadows says he lived in a n. Carolina mobile home he has never lived in. what would a multimillionaire be doing living in a mobile home…..what a cheat, but he is being investigated for this voter fraud crime.

    2. "hang mike pence"…criminal threat……DOJ Failed
    3. offering pardons… witness tampering……DOJ Failed
    4. inciting violence Jan 6 ……DOJ Failed

    5. ToiletGate – trump destroyed government documents and took secret documents home after losing his job! see presidential records act for details of the law he violated. It is well documented that Trump stole secrete document from the White House.

    6. interfering with elections……DOJ Failed
    7. contempt of congress……DOJ Failed
    8. fake electors ……DOJ Failed

    9. kelly ward and spouse and others, impersonating as government electors even after Barr and Pence said one could not do that……DOJ Failed

    10. Jeffrey Clark – co-conspirator for trying to weaponized the department of justice to overturn the election

    11. Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act applies to what Trump did.

By summer time, Georgia will enter phase 2 of their prosecution efforts for election interference…… how slow.

    12. what about enforcing the 14th amendment of the Constitution of the United States? get rid of Cawthorn under section 3 of the 14th Amendment

    13. muller investigation……DOJ Failed…. statue of limitation expired!
    14. Will New York speak with Trump under oath? No because of corruption. New York DOJ appears to be supporting Trumps so dont expect progress there!

alvin bragg is another DA that supports Trumpism. Trump committed a crime and is not being prosecuted. New York should remove bragg from office.

actions speak louder than speculation, at this time I am convinced Garland wont prosecute Trump or any top insurrectionist. Only time will reveal why! in time Trump will be mentally broken or dead and then this insurrection nonsense will slowly die too. how sad that some people get away with murder!

virgina thomas, wife of supreme court justice Clarence Thomas is an insurrectionist too. it was discovered that she was pushing for the election overthrow. Ginni Thomas, the conservative activist who’s married to Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, repeatedly pressed Trump’s White House chief of staff to pursue efforts to overturn the 2020 election

"This is a fight of good versus evil. Evil always looks like the victor until the King of Kings triumphs. Do not grow weary in well doing. The fight continues. MEADOWS TEXT TO THOMAS

no major arrest for seditious conspiracy leaders. The disgraced former president Trump, Trumps chief of staff, and a gang of congressional members in the House and Senate continue to conspired to undermine American democracy.

now we know that Trumps secret service tried to get Pence out of the Capital so Pence would not be able to certify the election.

    …Putin = Trump
Trumpism is a support for Putin. Wake up and Lock Trump up and support freedom.

Stop The Steal – Don't let Trumps steal our Democracy and make us like Russia!
Democracy will FAIL if Trump doesn't get indicted!

    save us from Trumpism!

    ..trump is evil
    ..trump is hate
    ..dont let hate win

  14. I wish I could afford one 😩

  15. Great propaganda video. Electric cars…not practicle in most of America. No chargers in my town. Drive 50 mile to find one. The local coop electric company infrastructure will not support the additional required charger capacity.

The leftie green agenda is delusional.

  16. Gas Truck, Gas ATV, Gas Boat, being in the middle of the woods priceless

  17. And just what exactly do you plan to do during the summer in the cities that can't handle the surge on the power grids that are from everyone running their AC units??? Yep – NO ONE is going to go anywhere if the entire grid is down.

  18. its easy just burn enough oil to generate enough electricity to charge the vehicles. Do you snowflakes really think that any government would give up oil.

  19. Electric car😀😀😀😀😀…..no gasoline in America and Britain, put more sanctioned on Russia.

  20. The same problems that doomed ev's in 1910.

  21. I don’t know much about this things. But if 80% of the total electric power comes from gas, nuclear, and coal. So most electric cars are being power by burning fuel then. Am I that wrong? I assume the advantage would be that the air in cities would be a bit cleaner, but power plant are close to cities too?

  22. Don't you have responsibility to show about Tesla who has super charging network and ha more than 50% market share?
    Don't you have any shame?

  23. The solution is not an electric car that still needs a power station its a solar powered car which can charge itself as u drive.

  24. Can't even afford a good used car now how is anyone going to afford an electric vehicle, they won't be any good for used car market if you have to buy a $10000.00 battery ?

  25. Also, check for this Electric Vehicle Energy Management System. DCC-12 or DCC-9 for your condo when your meter is accessible.

  26. The problem is the time it takes to charge a battery and the inconvenience for even thinking about electric cars for millions of auto drivers who dont live in a house with a garage. Swapping out a battery like that one business is a good idea but WAY TOO CUMBERSOME with their model of doing it. If a customer had a battery they could quickly replace themselves in the same time to do a gas fill up is one idea but it would have to be a clean swap as most people wouldn't want to get their hands dirty especially dressed for the office. Or maybe we can go back to the old days "ie 40'and 50's" like with the gas station fill up jockeys but only this time with quickly replacing a charged battery in a couple of minutes rather then the gas fill up. Add cleaning the windows and services with a smile and maybe this might be a winner again?

  27. Most people don't need more than one home charger 99% of the time.
I would focus on adding chargers to apartments. if you start the day with a full battery (80% to be precise )you won't even think about range.

  28. Bring back the chevy volt. PHED. I get 30 – 40 miles on mine and I just drive on gas when I need to leave town. It cuts out 80% of my gas usage and I feel no pain at the pump or at the charge station.

  29. On average a Tesla lasts 2 years.
Ford's are suppose to last 4 to 5 years but it's to early.
Hybrids seem more logical but are still not widely available.

  30. "I'm not gonna spill all the beans right now. What I can say is we're gonna move to just truly massive scale that no company has ever achieved in the history of humanity. And we need that and it has to happen in order to transition the world to sustainable energy." –Elon Musk

  31. Couldn’t the EPA enact regulations to require petroleum fueling stations to also provide charging stations? The oil & gas industry receives a ton of taxpayer money from state governments in particular, there is no reason they could not be required to provide electric vehicle charging as a condition of their continued ability to sell gas.

  32. I'm waiting impatiently for the Hummer SUV EV to hit my local gmc dealer.
    Just…..2…..more….years……

  33. It's really tough to judge how many chargers you need because a lot of people only need to charge at home except for once in a while.

  34. I will never go electric even when it's against the law to use gasoline. Tell everyone what the battery prices are?! If it's anything like a $20,000 tesla battery no one will switch.

  35. Should be Hybrids by 2030, then all electric by 2040.

  36. I hate to be the party pooper, but electric cars are charged on the electric grid which is predominantly fueled by fossil fuels.
Also, lithium battery waste will be the next disaster.
