How The Adorable Atlantic Puffin Came Back From Near Extinction | Nightly News Films



Adorable, rainbow-beaked Atlantic puffins were once so prized that they were nearly hunted to extinction. One man is responsible for their resurgence in population: biologist Steve Kress. The birds face a new challenge: climate change. As waters warm, the puffins’ most-preferred food source is moving farther away, making it difficult for adults to feed chicks. NBC News’ Kerry Sanders travels to Eastern Egg Rock Island in the Gulf of Maine to learn more.

  1. One big hole in the story, they forgot to say they got their breeding pairs to start the new population from Canada, where three different breeds still existed.

  4. Puffins have a special place in my heart. My Dad called my daughter Puffin since the day she was born,(1987) until he passed in 2015. Ok, now I am crying.

  19. There are approximately 350 to 400 thousand Atlantic Puffins in Atlantic Canada. Approximately 12 million of breeding age worldwide and 24 million grand total. There's more to the world than just the USA ☺️✌️🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
