The U.S. is facing a national pilot shortage which has contributed to this summer’s travel chaos. The government is estimating that the U.S. will need 14,000 pilots a year for the next decade. NBC News’ Tom Costello got an exclusive look at a United Airlines training program. The program is pushing through a record 40 to 70 new hires every week.

My husband sat at a regional for 13. 5 years before getting hired in into a major airline. It is crazy how in need they are now. Been talking about this shortage for years and it is finally here.
I spent nearly that much (100k) just getting my initial 3 licenses (includes living expenses for 3 years). I’m only at a single-engine commercial license now. If United wants to take me and train me up until I can fly a regional jet or higher, I will literally sign my soul over to you.

That is nice they only mentioned the top 1% of pilots’ pay right before they are forced to retire, but if they wanted to be fair they should have mentioned the starting salary as well. It is definitely an interesting profession, but if you are doing it solely for the money, it probably won’t work out for you.
