The underlying cause of most of the decline of our country in the last two decades is social media. The enormous sea change in our communication methods has replaced reliable information sources like newspapers and TV newsmedia with Facebook rumor mills and blogosphere conspiracy factories. Events caused by internet fake news include: the election of Trump, the 2020 Big Lie, the Jan 6 coup attempt, the antivaxx movement, the “birther” movement that claims Obama wasn’t a citizen, the 911 “truther” movement, 1 million Americans killed by COVID due to refusal to vaccinate and mask, and the laws in Red states restricting voting rights. A huge social media platform whose algorithm feeds people fringe content to try to behaviorally modify them into angry extremists, is not “free speech”. We need to get control of Silicon Valley monopolies like Facebook and YouTube, whose platforms have just become cesspools of lies. No one voted Mark Zuckerberg the world information czar.
