Ukraine lost its status as a free democracy in 2014 when a West-supported junta overthrew its last elected government. There's been an active civil war in Ukraine ever since, that has been downplayed and the Ukrainian patriots in independent regions labeled as terrorists.
The US could have brokered a peaceful resolution at any time but the the Deep State does not want peace.
