James Cameron wishes he had been ‘more vocal’ over dangers of Titan submersible

Filmmaker James Cameron said he wishes he had sounded the alarm earlier about the submersible Titan that imploded on an expedition to the Titanic wreckage, saying he had found the hull design risky. Cameron became a deep-sea explorer in the 1990s while researching and making his Oscar-winning blockbuster “Titanic,” and is part owner of Triton Submarines, which makes submersibles for research and tourism.

  1. Compressed air tanks, like scuba tanks, have to be pressure tested every so often. It's called hydrostatic testing, and it brings the pressure up to about 5/3rds of the rated pressure. If the tank fails, it fails. If the tank expands more than a certain limit, it fails.
Steel and aluminum tanks are tested every fie years. Steel tanks are considered good as long as they pass the testing.
Carbon fiber tanks, which are used by firefighters because they weigh less, are tested every 3 years. They also have a hard limit on when they MUST be retired.

    Why?
Because an 80 cubic foot tank inflated to 3000psi has the stored potential energy of a stick of dynamite.

This sub was under MUCH higher pressures, and was a MUCH larger area.

I get it. A carbon fiber tank is MUCH lighter than a corresponding steel or aluminum tank. But, carbon fiber works by having strands held together by an adhesive. The shifting of the strands by constant pressure cycling causes the adhesive to weaken. That weakens the entire structure.

It's possible to test to see if there are any voids in the structure, but it's expensive, and not reliable at the pressures that this sub was dealing with.

It was just a mater of time before this happened.

  2. Laws are written with the blood of the dead.

  3. And also if "the community" is going to continue to dive these submersibles "the community" needs to come up with a private means to rescue these private subs themselves and not make the taxpayer have to foot the bill for searching for them or trying to rescue them. If your rich and you want to play in the deep blue sea, come up with a plan to save yourselves.

  4. Then why didn't he? He should stop acting like he could have saved everyone if only he'd had the courage to speak up.

  5. LAW SUITS will be filed.

  6. Why'd you cut out the part of him saying he knew MONDAY of the explosion! This is the problem with news outlets!

  7. so tragic i like that he kept the clip short, too long and i lose attention to what i am watching

  8. We know you are right, but it's not the right time to blame the dead for the sake of people who lost families

  9. I’m glad it happened. I would pay for more people to take that same trip. There are too many humans, most are useless, and I can’t comprehend why you people are fixated on dead stupid rich people.

  10. Oceangate should face a lawsuit

  11. I agree with James Cameron. There is a reason he declined the option to use a carbon fiber composite construction for his submersible. It cannot withstand repeated pressure cycles. To put it simply, it's like picking up and putting down a sandwich too many times. It just starts to come apart.

  12. I’m so glad Stockton Rush didn’t hire those uninspiring 50 yr old white males.

    Oh wait….

  13. WUTT ABOAT Biden letting terrorists into America Y'all ain't saying 💩 if another (9-11) happens you idiots will just blame Trump how stupid can you be 😲🤨

  14. NBC NEW'S DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT REAL NEWS UNLESS IT'S ABOUT "LIE'S" "NARRITIVES"*"RUMOR'S" FAKE"FAKE"FAKE"🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤣

  15. The Olympians not the titanic

  16. It's crazy that they knew they were dead and still put all those rescue crews' lives in danger. Rich people are a disease.

  17. Curious why they kept saying they heard banging when the navy heard the implosion days ago??

  18. Somewhere there is a expert saying it SHOULD have worked, but hey that's why its called experimental. Ring a bell?

  19. The “fake it till you make it” or “think outside the box” motto is getting out of hand. Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush having an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering and suddenly becoming an expert in both deep sea exploration and material science of carbon fiber for underwater vessels is a lot like Elizabeth Homes, a college dropout, who suddenly becomes the world’s leading expert in blood testing technology and founding Theranos.

  20. You could’ve just said, “look over there at the shiny object distraction “ . With all that you say you know from your film the titanic have you ever opened your mouth about the real social engineering results from those specific people who were eliminated…? It’s not too late to do the right thing.

  21. "Warnings that were ignored" So simple and profound.

  22. Yes James it might’ve been a good idea for you to speak up. Now that there’s been some thing horrific that’s happened you have no problem getting on the news on every channel to talk about it.

  23. I had thought the same thing James Cameron did. I couldn’t understand why the searchers didn’t just go straight to the last know location start away. They would have had answers within hours of launching a search rather than making the families and the world wait. It was found only 400 odd metres from the titanic. Such stupid logic and mismanagement

  24. Wonder what bill of goods was sold to the occupants that this submarine was safe. It wasn’t even certified or properly tested.

  25. Somebody get Ja Rule on the phone to make sense of all this.

  26. They all signed a waiver in case they really did die….I wonder where they all will run away to with their money?

  27. “It was about warnings that were ignored”

  28. The bigger lesson here is, Avatar two failed for the same reason the Titanic Sub failed. They went Woke and paid the price.

  29. Even if you hate Trump we need to DEMAND that the democrats behind the Russia 🇷🇺 collusion hoax are at the very least removed from office so that trust can slowly be rebuilt!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Bless you James! I really hope it was, quick and painless 🙏

  31. not surprising since companies in the U.S. only care about profit above all else.
