There are about 3 large concepts at play that enable this reality to exist. 1. There's an unwritten high expectation of presidential behavior. We, simply, do NOT expect presidents to behave in the way Trump has because there was a level of class, tact, and intelligence embodied by presidents in the past.That's part of the reason we're woefully underprepared to hold Trump accountable for his behavior. Furthermore, social media and cameras are perpetually on. To admit to the WORLD that we voted for a reality tv star who completely took the country for a ride based on personal gain would be detrimental to our perception and place among world powers. So we make up lies to uphold the perception among world powers. Trump functioned completely separately in his personal behaviors and goals as president. Because he CHOSE to run as a Republican, he espoused Conservative viewpoints. The truth is, it would be incredibly difficult for Trump to succinctly AND comprehensively summarize even ONE bill that he signed while he was in office. If for no other reason, it is based on his singular focus on amassing personal power and money without a shred of interest or knowledge in/of politics. 2. We're socialized to trust our government, government officials, and especially the president. Believing that a president or government official on the federal level would be motivated to dupe, lie to, or directly take advantage of people for personal gain is a hard pill to swallow. 3. Race , gender and wealth. This is the gift that keeps on giving in this country. A BIG part of the reason there's been no accountability for Trump (yet) is because he's a rich, White, male. We don't typically vilify people with the combination of those identities. Accountability in this country is, more so, for poor people. Trump and the Republican party tapped into an age old tactic – fear. Specifically, the reality that this country was built for the comfort of White people and foreigners as well as non-White people are coming here to "steal" that away from White Americans. That's something very difficult to admit publicly because…well…it's racist…but it's something that's always playing out – especially in politics. The other piece of this is the fault of our 2 party system. The "system" runs regardless of who the president is. Chris Rock recently said a joke that basically said, "There are limo, cab, and Uber drivers across the country who are successfully delivering babies in their vehicles, as they desperately try to get the pregnant women to the hospital through traffic. That's because the human body is doing all of the work. In that way, the drivers only needed to keep the women calm, encourage them to push, and the body would do the rest. It's when something goes wrong that an expert is needed. The US Government works similarly. Anyone in this room can be president. If they represent one party, those policies will be written with one slant – larger government programs (Democrats) or less government involvement (Republicans). Congress generally manages those things and the systems are in place regardless of who the 'figure head' is at the top. There are even people who write their speeches. However, if something goes wrong, we'll need expertise at the top." Eventually, this reality is going to bite us in the ass. Politicians simply say what they think the voters want to hear in order to stay in power. But they don't believe in half of what they espouse. Neither do they deliver on what they promise. A lot of it is a game that those of us on the bottom play to lose. But trust me, if Obama did half of what Trump did, he would have been escorted out of the White House in handcuffs! Wait…Obama wouldn't have even been chosen to represent the Republican Party if he had 5 children by 3 different wives. We have a different standard for non-White men. Let's be honest for ONCE in this country.
