Kroger, Albertsons To Merge Amid Soaring Food Costs

As food costs are up more than 12% from 2021, two of America’s largest grocery store chains, Kroger and Albertsons, are preparing to merge in a deal worth roughly $25 billion. NBC News’ Joshua Johnson is joined by Sarah Miller from the American Economic Liberties Project which publicly opposes the planned merger as some lawmakers claim it would increase consumer costs.

  1. In my area Albertsons has bought out major profitable large grocery chains resulting in closure of three in our town because of Monopoly concerns meanwhile population has increased are stores have decreased and now with this merger there's going to be a concern of Monopoly which made indicate more stores closing and no competition but the Smith in Walmart as our population increases and prices steadily go up and will as well with no competition

  2. Both stores are horrible so this will definitely not be good.

  3. Wal mart looking better every day.

  4. But as a kroger worker…they don't pay us squat but they're raking in billions of our backs…They don't pay me enough to even shop there…🤬
I shop at Walmart, Save a lot & Aldi

  5. Kroger owns Ruler Foods in Saint Louis also…

  6. Well I have Faithfully being going to Safeway for about 30 and now I'm going to just get my Main Item from there and it's Distilled Water.Inl know I can't afford anything else after that 💯

  7. There's extensive laws against it but since they didn't stop Amazon it's not fair to go after anyone else.

  8. This entire country is turning into just a few monopolies.

  9. I wish the politicians had the balls to break up these monopolies. All these mergers do is discourage competition and stifle innovation. Get up the intestinal fortitude and start with Sherman and if that fails move to the next Anti-Trust act.

  10. we don't need more monopolies

  11. HEB would be king if they opened in other states….

  12. Our grocery stores cost so much more. They don’t even try. I shop at Walmart always.

  13. Break up these big companies.

  14. I'm glad that I don't shop at none of those store's!! 🎯💯🗣🗣😇😇

  15. Frankly they don't care if we starve as long as the shareholders are happy

  16. Food prices are up way more than 12%. I don't know where you get these figures.

  17. This deal should be nipped in the bud. Kroger is very high priced. Albertsons Tom Thumb Randall's Safeway and more gone this not good for consumers

  18. This is NOT INFLATION, it's PRICE GOUGING. Lucky for us we get better food and a cheaper prices and avoid Albertson's overpriced crap!

  19. This is what happens when you deregulate everything. I don’t see lower prices…I see a monopoly of higher prices and more corporate greed. I try to never shop at any of those stores for price. Thank goddess for Winco that is employee owned.

  20. Where is the target?

  21. Just what we need, more Corporatism and less competition. Totally excited about this.

  22. They're better to trim than merge, some locations are excellent. It is short term relief for a power grab.

  23. This is going to keep happening until there is just one big corporation that rules all of us.

  24. just think this brand store krogers said they couldn't pay their workers four dollars more & hr when c virus was going on right but now can pay for a so many billion dollar grocery store chain lol

  25. Albertson and Krogers are expensive. There's a Albertsons in my town only the with money shops there, The only time you see customers, with low income in Albertsons is when Walmart has ran out of mustard greens. You'll find Glorias in a can.

  26. Albertson's in the Southwest Western United States has always been much more expensive than Smith's (Kroger). No apparent competition going on there.

  27. Democrats VOTED for Record High Inflation, Doubling of Food Prices, and Tripling of Food Prices…Perhaps they should be the ones paying for this Biden Gift….

  28. Instead of helping a jewel store in Chicago I'm pretty sure the high-end executive at Kroger's is going to abandon that store

  29. I laugh when I hear consumers panicking over food prices. They think it's the end. I'm allready at the bottom end. I'm homeless with little income. All my food comes from 99 cent store and dollar tree. Fruits, vegetables, bread, milk, and fish can all be bought from there. Oh and I carry this all on a bicycle with a huge front and huge rear basket. Stop driving 3 times a day rather than one trip and the prices rising will not effect you.

  30. Well that should mean high end executives loosing their jobs to the most educated executives

  31. Grow your own as much as possible ❤❤❤❤

  32. Such dumb the govt allowing airlines and now grocery stores to merge noooo

  33. Not good. We need a diverse market to encourage competitive prices.

  34. But record prices mean record profits, the stores aren't suffering they're trying to buy and build more

  35. The only one of those stores near me are the Safeways and they are always the highest prices outside of Sprouts and Wegmans and they don't have the quality of a Sprouts or Wegmans.

  36. We are depending on the brainiac young people to come up with something for the good of their country. Yes, some can make their own gardens, but not possible for millions. It’s going to take some thought & working together to overcome these big corp giants preying on lesser than them!

  37. I never heard of Albertsons, but Krogers has always been really high priced, extremely high priced since they want to get theirs in an inflation period worldwide, but people will go where prices are lower so there ya go krogers, good one. I’ll shop elsewhere.

  38. Small point perhaps, but suppliers are upstream, not downstream. Her using an incorrect descriptor is a bit discordant.

  39. MONOPOLY WARNING!!!
The Government should NOT allow them to merge!! They would become a Monopoly in many Communities😡

  40. Albertsons/Safeway. Plus some smaller chain that was swallowed up in mix and disappeared. Now Fred meyers/Albertsons/Safeway. Seems like a monopoly. So will be Walmart, Costco and these 3 stores own by same company in many areas.

  41. Kroger is the worst store I've ever seen, terrible quality, bad prices, and lousy workers. They've ruined every store they've bought out here, which is too bad. It used to be a good, locally-owned chain. Shame on the family for selling it to such a bad company.

  42. Winco isn't having any problems keeping inflation down..
Kroger is Lying, they're after all your money, every time you walk through their door.
