Across the United States, some malls are undergoing big changes. Businesses such as animal shelters, trampoline parks and movie theaters are filling the spaces that have been left empty in recent years. NBC News’ Brian Cheung has the story.

put apartment units in malls that will bring a lot of customers
We have a mall that needs rehab. They should rip it down and build a bunch of mom and pop retail shops intertwined with essential services and entertainment and put rentals on top. It'd be awesome.
These transitions will only work in communities without you know who. Otherwise these new spaces will be trashed within days
In short, are having trouble attracting top paying tenants. Too many non-retail tenants is generally a bad sign. As the ones mentioned in the news piece, none are unique. All have been tried numerous times before with often the end result being the same. More indoor malls will close leaving a smaller number of super malls, such as King of Prussia Mall in PA.
Our mall is absolutely dead, nothing has worked and they have been trying for years. What will happen is they will eventually bulldoze it.
Public Library! Who goes to the library?
This is amazing! I hope this trend continues! I can see stuff like bowling alleys, indoor playgrounds, etc. being a thing. And thank you, NBC NEWS, for reporting a story bound to inspire other municipalities!
malls killed by anti vaxxers
Once there was Main Street (mom and pop stores, restaurants, galleries, delis, walking and seeing friends and neighbors), then came chain store malls that killed Main Street (at least people were still walking, and meeting socially), then came the god-awful Wal-Mart, and Dollar stores that killed what was left of Main Street, and malls. Now we have fat, lazy, socially inept kids and adults ordering Amazon packages at home, so they barely have to get up from their Cheetos bag. Thank god for places like Carmel, and Montecito California that BAN those stores!! And luckily there’s still travel to wonderful, charming Europe!!
It’s what I have been wishing for. Malls should be entertainment focused now. Clothing stores are still necessary to actually try the clothes on, but I entertainment seems very profitable to me. Perhaps more than clothes
Finally an uplifting story!
An almost dead mall near me in NorCal has a library branch, DMV office, a roller skating rink an other business offices in place of closed retail stores. Very busy and useful space now.
Some stuff I now see in malls look more like desperation to keep them from going down hill even more. An animal shelter in the mall may initially help a bit, but things may drop off, like other things a mall tries. Once everyone in the neighborhood has a cat, why go back to the shelter again. Cats usually live about 12 – 15 years. Visiting the mall once over 12-15 years won't do much for business. If having a pet store in the mall didn't save the mall, an animal shelter might not either.
Good idea.
I love malls, i was born in 1995…when i was young my parents took me to the mall and wed spend all day shopping and eating at the food court , i had so many good memories with my mom…you cant put a price on that.
"What makes people live their houses?"
This is a brilliant idea. I hope all states are going to do this.
What has the Orange Julius become?
Obidens economy sucks for everyone
Add indoor parks maybe even a grocery store or farmers market. With that shelter an indoor dog park would be cool as well! Instead of just fast food do what Vegas does. Put nice restaurants inside. Not just rainforest cafe…
It is a wild thought that maybe malls are dying more due to increased suburban sprawl, largely facilitated by urban blight and the Highway Trust Fund, which then incentivizes eCommerce. The woman said it best— “what will get people to leave their houses”
This wasn't why the mall was built.
This won't last. We have a failed mall like that in my city. Place is always dead quiet. I only walk through it. Good luck.
This is great!! A library in a mall is brilliant! Next turn the abandoned office buildings into low-income housing and we may just find away out of our impending dystopian doom. 🙌🏾☺️
When I was living in India back in 2015, the smaller malls there were already beginning to make the transition. Expect to also start seeing motorcycle showrooms.
Great idea!!
Speaking of transforming. How is NBC’s coverage of the Biden bribery investigation coming along?
❤
Whats a "liebrary"?
When will American workers do when AI takes 1/3 of all jobs?
Thanks Amazon for killing millions of jobs and businesses.
Can they turn some spaces into apartments ? Multi concept buildings is the way to go to be more eco friendly. People not having to drive to get a lot of basic things . In Los Angeles they are looking to build a Costco which will be part of an apartment building .
Brilliant. And a good news story.
Considering how hard it is for families to get to theme parks , i'm surprised some malls , or parts of malls , haven't been transformed into mini Disney and Universal theme parks.
We need to heavily tax pet food. There are more pets than people willing to become furever pawrents
So many abandoned malls that are wasting away with plants invading it, flooding, and graffiti! I saw an article about an abandoned mall and somebody had thought, "why not just turn it into some apartments or a school/college that could open up some classes? Before its too late and get destroyed. A mall literally has the same floor plan as a college, just with open shops, food courts, and multiple floors."
Online shopping should only be used when you can’t find something locally. People need to support the local community businesses mall and Main Street stores. Don’t fall into the trap of ordering everything online. Things online are often overpriced for what it is. Go for a walk and enjoy yourself spend the day at the mall.
I love this!! Keep it coming.
Add a highrise tower full of apartments attached to the mall with key access, glass over some of the ceilings of the mall to let in more light make the indoors feel more like outdoors and I'm totally there. It would be great to be able to have so much indoor space on extremely hot, cold, or rainy days. Being able to walk from my apartment down to a convenience store in the mall, or go to an urgent care office in the mall etc. – basically turn it into an indoor, climate controlled village
That's actually exciting and thought-provoking. People need to get out, but shopping is not a social event, and it's expensive. We need somewhere to go and get out and not spend a lot of money since Joe Biden crashed our economy and caused all that inflation and killed hopes of a brighter future. Life in America really sucks. People are afraid to spend money.
Good.
