Matthew started acting on Friends when he was 24, so if they had met years earlier they were really young. She was probably trying to get her life together.
Ironically she probably would have been happier with him than any of the pretty boys she dated. Not saying anyone can cure mental illness but love can go a long way in creating purpose and structure in ones life and he would have been good to her I think
