This entire situation so far seems a lot like a covert hostile takeover, but not by some of the board members of OpenAI, but rather Microsoft themselves. I'm sensing some corporate espionage and collusion between OpenAI and Microsoft, as seemingly out of nowhere, they've given a perfect situation where Microsoft can easily, with impunity, poach important talent and leadership from the Non-profit, place them under their roof to develop from scratch (and with full ownership) new AI technologies with the wealth of knowledge and expertise they've gathered from developing LLMs and Image processing models like ChatGPT and Dall-E, and still have access to further progress and advancements from OpenAI (if it continues to exist after this, which it most likely will), without catching the eye of government for anti-trust, conspiracy and monopolistic behavior.
The whole thing looks to convenient for all parties involved as basically, the members of the board, investors and employees of OpenAI that wanted to accelerate AI Development for rapid commercial adoption can now work on that freely without judgement and a whole lot more resources from now working with and under Microsoft, while the members, investors and employees of the company that were against that direction and strategy, who preferred a more careful and meticulous approach that focused more heavily on research and science, can stay in the company and do so. It all happened so quickly and fits too neatly to just be a result of pent up emotions and sporadic judgement, only for it to resolve itself with little impact to the actual AI development of the companies.
I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but I wonder whether there'll be an investigation of this potential possibility. We'll have to wait and see how it goes either way as everything is still in the air at the moment.
at least he was being honest about a product
A door closes and a windows 98 opens
Impressive coup on Microsoft's part.
They basically gutted OpenAI. Took the ceo and all the lead developers. They already took the best models ages ago, now they have the talent too. OpenAI is finished, and now AI is completely in private hands controlled by Microsoft.
A bit scary to lose the open source models. But little you can do other than buy MS stock.
Isnt this guy supposed to be in jail for stabbing those 4 college kids??? 😂
Emmet Shear has a tendency to jump onboard sinking ships known as failing companies! Props to Sam Altman and Microsoft they really secured the bag with this.
