Abandoned oil and gas wells can cause toxins and dangerous greenhouse gasses to leak into water supplies and, in some extreme cases, cause explosions. They are often left unplugged by companies that are long out of business. Nearly five million people live within a half mile of an abandoned well. NBC News’ Cynthia McFadden has the investigation.

What's an abandoned gas well have to do with leaving their stove on?
There should be a special fund that oil, gas and electric companies have to contribute to so that when a tax paying citizen can't get clean drinking water because some shyster made drilled in and then skipped town, the homeowner is not bearing that burden. That's absolutely wrong. That person made his fortune and went on his merry way. Meanwhile, we the peasants suffer. How would that owner feel if it were his family that would have poisoned water? Those who do this kind of stuff never seem to have to endure the consequences.

worked at a house before here in Pennsylvania where they got it super cheap, but had to dig a new well far away from the house—-the old well had gas in it, and you could light the water on fire

Finally we are going to pay attention to the leaking gas from dry oil wells. in 1941 my grandfather, a geologist, said gas leaking from oil wells will be 15 % of all harmful pollution. If we can cap and process, yes, use the gas for electric generation we will address 15 % of climate change. This ignored energy source is a tragedy and an opportunity like a franchise. Modern equipment can find these wells. Modern processing can process the diffent gases. We can do this.

HA THEY ARE DEBATING WHAT CAUSED THE EXPLOSION OR INVESTIGATING IT. COOKING GAS HAS A SMELL BECAUSE PRODUCERS OF COOKING GAS MUST POT CHEMICALS IN THE GAS SO IT CAN BE DETECTED BY SMELL IF THERE IS A LEAK VERY SMALL CHANCE THAT COOKING GAS COULD FILL A BASEMENT WITHOUT BEING DETECTED BY SMELL.
ALL GASES BURN WITH CERTAIN COLOR SO SIMPLY LOOKING AT THE FLAME PRODUCED BY THE EXPLOSION ONE CAN REASONABLY ASSUME THE GAS WAS NOT OF A REFINED CONDITION PROBABLY A MIX OF METHANE AND OTHER LONG CHAIN CARBONS.

All industries leave a mess after they shut down and the costs are carried by the community and not the fat cats that became wealthy. Contaminated rivers, air.
