This shooting AFFECTS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US. That shooter got a hold of that gun illegally and went on a rampage due to his poor mental health. HE COULD HAVE SHOT ANYONE, NOT JUST AN ASIAN.
🤔 Though this is clearly a tragedy, I'm always wondering why it's also an opportunity to fundraise lots of money from the general public too. In this case, the 20 families can get at least $50K each from one GoFundMe page asking for $750,000. Unless you're dirt poor and on welfare, it used to be a matter of personal pride to take care of our own parents, grandparents' wakes, funerals, etc, with perhaps some contributions from friends and family. Here, except for 1-2 in their 50's who died and especially those who survived with medical bills, everybody else was retired and living comfortably. It's weird to ask the general public to donate to their, most likely, already well-off families. I feel it's more appropriate to ask donations for the 7 Half Moon Bay victims also died from mass shooting same weekend. After all, those people were definitely the working poor and, very likely, left behind young children and families either here or in their home countries.

And here I was, thinking that it was a "racially-motivated" crime, by an offender with an southeast Asian background and from the same community no less… well, my impression is that this is what corporate media would like me to blindly think of the situation.
Yes, there have been incidents of actual "racially motivated" hate crimes in recent memory, largely encouraged by establishment officials associating covid-19 with China and the ever increasing attacks on things associated with China [think Tiktok, for example] coming from the highest levels of govt, but that does not mean events should no longer be carefully examined in their own right on a case-by-case basis. It sets a dangerous trend, considering that, had this event involved an offender with an ethnic background other than "AAPI", it would have gratuitously been dismissed as another "racially-motivated" crime, without any real investigation into the true circumstances surrounding the situation. Chronic inaccurate sourcing of a problem cannot solve a reoccurring problem in the final analysis.

Thoughts and prayers to the impacted families. Funny hearing how safe it is in Monterey Park. I moved here a year ago on the border of Monterey Park and Alhambra, about a mile from each studio. I would say I hear gunshots about 3 days per week and I think that it has become a way of life that nobody here gives it a second thought. The mayor is a bit out of touch – a melting pot where 92% of your population is comprised of 2 ethnicities?
The suspect is resting in peace so why does it matters.
