In a statement from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the church expresses its support for both protecting religious freedom and respecting LGBTQ rights under the law. As Senators work to pass a bill codifying same sex-marriage, the LDS Church says “we believe this approach is the way forward.”

Surprising but welcome news. Of course, I understand why any smart religious organisation would support religious rights. After all, if the ultra-conservatives that currently control many of the Courts had their way, the US would turn into an Evangelical theocracy. Those loonies are a threat to anyone who doesn't adhere to their own dogma, not just LGBTQ+ folks.

As a utahn this is suuccchhhhh bs. The church is just seeing the way the world is shifting, and they don't want to lose any members. Giving their support politically does not mean that these people are getting support in their wards & in their day-to-day lives. The church is just fearful of losing their 'power'
