A New York City man who was charged with murder is now walking free following the release of a controversial video that showed him killing a customer who assaulted him behind the counter of a bodega. The worker claimed it was self-defense and after public outcry, the DA dropped the charges. NBC News’ Steven Romo has the reaction from his community.

I was always taught as a Marital Artist that in NYS one has the duty to retreat when being attacked and able unless in your home. If there is no retreat one can use self-defense through physical force (deadly force if a weapon is used against the victim). In the video, the Bodega worker did a great job to spin the attacker around so he can retreat (video does not show if someone was blocking his retreat). The DA needs to clarify the law.
John Correia, from the Active Self Protection Youtube Channel had such a bad take on this man being charged for self defense, he started hiding people's comments on his channel. He as a certified self-defense instructor felt this man acted unreasonably and should have been charged with murder, and he couldn't handle the criticism as a result.
If you have his insurance, Firearms Legal protection, reconsider. You don't want a con man taking your money claiming he'll defend you in court, only to have inconsistent takes and really poor biases. I certainly wouldn't want to pay to have him in my corner.

This guy's cousin is next, they claim it makes for a dangerous precedent, but doing nothing and allowing criminals to do what they want is a far dangerous precedent..
But they already put the guy in jail before they drop the charge, they made him serve a week at Ryker's for defending himself which is more than most people serve for actual assaults. Unacceptable. Sue the city.
