The U.S. Navy has released images of the suspected Chinese spy balloon that was shot down by a U.S. fighter jet over the weekend off the coast of South Carolina, giving new insight into the size and scale of the unmanned aircraft. NBC News’ George Solis has the details.

Despite what a lot of people enjoy thinking, the military is not a bunch of blithering idiots. The generals and admirals have achieved their rank because they have the experience to know what's going on and the history to guide them as to what to do – mostly. So if you can think of some kind of "what if", be very sure that not only did they already think of it, debate it, compare to other possibilities and outcomes, but they had far more intel and technical know-how to calculate the possible scenarios than you. So if you are so sure that you are in any position to second guess them and opine as to how they handled this completely wrong, or missed some facet of the story that you didn't, I'm quite sure you are sadly mistaken.
That said, shooting it down over water sounds like the right choice to me. 1) it was going slow enough to allow plenty of time to weigh the different outcomes from different choices they might make. There didn't seem to be any imperative to act with haste giving them more time to study it in action so as to have a clearer idea of what the thing really was. 2) it wasn't going to dash off and they would miss their chance to take action. 3) taking it out over land has so many bad scenarios possible – too many to list here. 4) taking it down over the ocean, but still within the U.S. sovereignty zone means they would have far greater control over collecting and securing the tons of structure and equipment to be confirmed and studied. *(far better than having some yokels wandering through the wreckage collecting shiny objects to use for drunken target practice.) 🙂 5) If this was as China claims, why didn't they make contact and say that their balloon was drifting in a way they didn't intend, "sorry. Here's a breakdown of what it is and what it is doing – again sorry for the intrusion of yours, and five other sovereign nations' legal airspace." That contact apparently never happened.
This is an international issue involving one of the worst and most potentially dangerous countries in modern times.
I'm inclined to let the people who have a far better chance of taking all of those things ( and much more) into account decide on the best option to take.

Ummmm not in this video it didn't. It showed two small coastguard boats at a dock with scuba diving equipment.
These fools at the news station don't even know what they are looking at, and they think the American people are dumb enough to believe them. Ridiculous.
Also they show Joe trying to act tough, and how he protected our sovereignty. Meanwhile Joe let the balloon Enter our air space.. fly completely across much of the country and only when it exited the country was it shot down.

Some say they were worried of it falling on a house.. so you mean to tell me from start to finish it didn't fly over an open area to shoot it down safely. Or just find a way to bring it down slowly.. this is 2023 folks. There HAS to be a better way.
