That "hit" has happened 10's of thousands of times in Pop Warner, high-school, college and professional football.
I was an engineer with GE Medical Systems in the 1960's before mandatory seat belts. The medical community wanted to know why some people hit the steering wheel with such force it broke their sternum and they lived. Some barely hit the wheel and they died.
Research cardiologists did animal studies and through them found if the person was thrown forwards at the EXACT moment in the QRST cardiac cycle and hit the steering wheel with their chest, they would go into cardiac ventricular fibrillation called Commotio Cordis, which is Latin for “agitation of the heart“. The heart would "flutter" but not return to beating correctly.
This is a very rare event, but is known to happen in sports that can result in blows to the chest, like baseball, American football, ice hockey, polo, rugby, cricket, softball, boxing, wrestling and martial arts.
The control "window" for this event to happen is but a few milliseconds, but is increased in athletes because they have a greatly increased heart-rate while playing.
All the evidence appears to point to that event with Damar.
THAT'S why it doesn't happen more often and has NOTHING to do with being vaccinated or not.

Everybody knows what happened to Damar Hamlin because it’s happened to too many athletes around the world since COVID vaccination was required in sports
Praying for him, and his teammates. I’m also praying for the player who tackled him. I cannot image the sheer shock and responsibility felt by him. It wasn’t intentional but my god the sheer fact that it triggered the cardiac arrest shakes me. So I’m praying for him as well.
