Forget about the story….what the hell is up with America airforce sending out jets a HOUR and Half after the fact everytime. What's the point of early advance warning systems if you clowns take over a hour past the incident to actually respond. The autopilot didn't assume the pilot wanted to go back to the point where it took off from (1:07). The flight plan, which would have been programmed into the aircraft's flight management system before departure, routed to Long Island airport (KISP) via a number of waypoints. The last waypoint was the Calverton VOR navigational aid (identifier "CCC"), which is the "initial approach fix" for the instrument landing approach to Runway 34 at Long Island. In other words, this is the point from which aircraft start their landing procedure for Long Island airport. However, this cannot be started without an "approach clearance" from ATC and pilot intervention. If the pilot did not specifically activate the approach on the flight management system (which he could not if he was incapacitated), then the aircraft would turn before CCC to put itself onto the direct course from CCC to the airport. After overflying the airport, it would continue on the (great circle) course connecting CCC to KISP, but flying away from the airport, with no pilot intervention whatsoever. I simulated this flight using the filed flight plan on a simulator with Garmin G1000 avionics and, with no pilot intervention after reaching cruising altitude, it flew the same course as shown on FlightRadar24, ending up 8 miles SSE of the Montebello VOR, which is approximately the point at which the accident aircraft turned to the right and crashed after running out of fuel. It is entirely a coincidence that the course from CCC to KISP, when extended, passes close enough to the departure airport that it seems as though the aircraft was returning to it. May the pilot and passengers rest in peace; condolences to their families.

if they lost cabin pressure the windows would have iced and the f16 pilots would not have been able to see inside , this was probably a medical situation and the poor folks in the back where most likely awake but unaware of the pilots condition as the plane was flying on auto pilot

I don't buy for a minute that this plane ran out of fuel and crashed – conveniently in a wooded area far from any homes or businesses. I don't buy for a minute that they saw the pilot slumped over and fired "flares" to try and get his attention. I don't buy for a minute that this pilot was flying at or above 20,000 feet (necessary to require cabin pressure in order to not pass out – which AT 20k feet, it takes 30 minutes to lose consciousness). I don't buy for a minute that this pilot was passed out and yet the plane automatically turned around and "headed back home". I don't buy that the NTSB can declare the cause of this accident within 24 friggin hours, when it takes them MONTHS, sometimes YEARS, to discover why other planes go down. I don't buy for a minute that flares were fired from those F16s. I believe those F16s were ordered to take the plane down, and they did.
1:07 I donโt think the auto pilot wanted to go โback to the place it took off fromโ. Thatโs not how auto pilots and FMCs work. It probably flew the runway 24 course, then stayed on the last known heading. Just happened to look like it was heading home, but Iโm sure thatโs a coincidence.

They intercepted it way before it crossed into the restricted air space above DC. It was then deemed to be a "ghost plane" as in the case if Stewart Payne and they could then wait for either an opportune time to down it or let it run out of fuel. Which of those scenarios played out is probably just speculation at this point.
