The cause of mass shootings in the U.S.A. is easy to identify, but it will be extremely difficult to address, since this symptom of societal breakdown emerges from the very essence of America: our overweening individualism.
What do these atrocities all have in common? These apparently "random" acts of violence nearly always occur in public spaces in which, historically, we were meant learn how to be together as a community. In the distant past of human civilization, venues like schools, churches, and markets were arenas ideally meant to challenge our innate natural proclivity toward selfishness, egoism and self-interest. But, over time, the unique political design of the U.S.A. caused our society to evolve in such a way that the very institutions that were supposed to socialize us in the bonds of wisdom, love, and mutual aid – the blessed "ties that bind" of traditional Christianity – became, instead, organizations that only loosely gathered individuals and individualists together to learn, practice, and perfect competition, conflict, and other rivalrous dynamics.
Mass shooters, whether they are aware of it or not, are nothing but agents of correction conjured up by the collective unconscious of America to curb the insanity of unbridled egoism, which manifests in our poliitcal-economic culture with the more polite term "capitalism." Unbeknownst to us, or even to themselves, these shooters are a (seemingly) chaotic but cleansing force of evil, like angels of wrath sent by God to correct the fool's errand of unrestrained greed and selfishness that is capitalist "society" (sic).
The insanity will not stop with more gun laws, nor with more law enforcement. This is a much deeper problem that is endemic to who and what we are as Americans: proud individualists who have have woven the culture of vanity, pride, and self-centeredness into very fabric of the very institutions that were originally meant to liberate us from egoism. At the heart of what could be schools for learning how to become a truly good, altruistic society, we have instituted the prisons of the self from which mass shooters are, willy nilly, trying to free us.
