Mass murder by vehicles and guns, ban them all. Ban knives. Ban shoelaces, ban the hundreds of deadly items and substances. Won't be enforceable or cure the problem. Not while we Ignore the mental health crisis our country has been under for the last 40 plus years since they closed down all the mental hospitals. Murder, substance abuse, violent crimes, and homelessness can all be decreased by making mental health a priority. Health insurance should be covering it just like routine physical health care. People need to be able to ask for help coping without having to get a criminal record.
In my area, and this info was from a physician mind you: You must say you will hurt yourself or someone else. You will be taken into police custody (gaining a criminal record) and transported to a hospital. You will be evaluated and held up to 72 hours. If deemed a serious danger you will be given pamphlets, a number to the suicide hotline and a paper with psychologists and psychiatrists in your area (who are unlikely to take your insurance or new patients) and group therapy sessions recommended for your underlying issues. So basically, 72 hrs of hope, then back to what it was except now you are labeled violent and a danger to others and a record. So my friend was sent home and the doctor never did send the follow up info she promised. Instead she dropped my friend as a patient.Which deepened his depression, anger, anxiety and feelings of no one caring.
Seems to me that people have lost hope, all the expert's try to voice their opinion but always ignore the 6,000 pound gorilla in the room, supply side economics have destroyed the working-class and people have lost hope in the system. The answer is staring you in the face: The anger stoked by certain groups, the easy access to weapons of mass destruction, the failure to realize that everyone can snap, there are no "good guys" with guns, only flawed humans, with guns. And the more saturated we are with guns, the more gun deaths we will have. And the NRA and gun manufacturers, who have pushed for this exact scenario, will count all the money, the blood money, they have made from selling guns to all sides. No other country in our category have this happening. Some have said that those other countries don't have our freedoms. I guess not: they don't have our "freedom" to be gunned down anywhere at anytime for any reason. I really don't count that as a "freedom", I consider it a curse. Mind you, the 2nd amendment reads exactly as follows: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Please note the phrase "A well regulated Militia", the term "regulated" aka "regulation" is written right into the 2nd amendment. So let us implement common sense "regulation". Oh, and btw, every gun owner should probably take a good stint in that said "well regulated Militia" (the framers meant a State militia, not some crackpot group). And a final note: EVERY COUNTRY has about the same amount of people with mental health challenges, and they do NOT have our gun deaths. Its NOT the mental health (red herring), its the high saturation of guns.
