Sad that this nation abandoned what once was a good transportation system which has left us with limited options.
The airline industry has been in decline since the fare wars of the 90s and 9/11 mainly due to their own policies and ongoing consolidation within the industry that further limited choices. I still wonder what happened to that 54$ billion in pandemic bailouts (meant for retaining workers) when airlines let employees go and even offered early retirement to some. Now they whine that they don't have enough people to keep up with the demand and have resorted to delaying, cancelling, and even permanently eliminating flights .
So what is left? The worst option, the automobile, which is the most expensive mode of travel per seat mile (a standard measure of cost in the transportation industry). For many, it is also an expensive option as it's just not the price of petrol, and the vehicle as there are many other ongoing expenses involved in owning a car. More people on the roads means more traffic which leads not only to local issues in cities, higher fuel consumption, and emissions, but also a higher potential for traffic deaths. With airlines warning of major flight reductions before the heaviest holiday travel season (and usually worst weather of the year) yet to come, this does not bode well at all.
