Political commentators have failed to address or perhaps deliberately ignored the most evident reason behind Trump's reluctance to pass the border bill. Trump is still Putin’s puppet and receiving financial assistance from him. The bill includes ongoing funding for Ukraine, which Putin obviously needs to stop. Consequently, preventing the bill from passing is Trump's primary focus, as he believes that once he becomes president, he can take credit for passing a border bill and most importantly cut off funding for Ukraine.
The correct answer to the queation about "do you need to win south carolina" is NO and the reason is that this is a national campaign and it takes time to persuade the people on the national scale. Trump will keep getting more unpopular the longer this goes.
