Railroads are the most efficient and economic form of land transportation. Trucks require 4 to 5 times as much diesel fuel and 5 times as much labor to transport heavy freight across the continent. Trucks kill around 5000 people every year in the US and maim thousands more. If we didn't have the railroads everything would cost massively more. If we didn't have the railroads the Interstate system would be an endless procession of trucks and the asphalt would need repaved every 4 months because trucks cause 99% of highway wear and tear. Most commodities delivered on trucks have already been transported by rail in its raw form like iron ore, grain etc. This wreck has been warned by rail workers for decades. The railroad owners are making record profits yet continue to cut trains crews and maintenance. Hazardous materials should be hauled on trains with speed restrictions and a CABOOSE manned by human beings that can see and smell when a rail car has a hot box/axle condition just like the old days. The last thing I want is the highways full of tractor trailers hauling toxic hazardous chemicals.

If the democrats were smart, they would be buying all the available billboard space in these communities and informing the red voters that they can thank Trump's deregulation and profits-over-safety/accountability drive for their current situation.
