LOL Russian building took hits from drowns and didn't collapse!
As of right now 11:31 pm Tuesday the 30th those 2 have still not been found
Considering that a person can live for 48 hours or more without water, they should be focusing on trying to find those missing people and not talking about demolishing the rest of the building. Unless they want to wait until way past 48 hours and decide there is no one left to save.
I work in Davenport and drive by this apartment complex everyday to get to work and to go home. I was driving home an hour after it collapsed and it stunk of gas. I hurt for my community and those affected. Even coming home today from work, a woman came up to my car with a candle begging traffic for prayers. God I still can’t believe this happened, so surreal seeing this all over national headlines.
I have stage four neuroendocrine cancer and had to stop working 14 months ago. I live in section 8 voucher housing. The inspections consist of a few things such as, do the drains drain, do the windows open, is there heat and hot water, is there ventilation in the bathroom and is there a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. The inspection takes less than five minutes and is done over a video phone call if the tenants phone has that capability. There is zero consideration given to common areas like entryways or hallways much less structural issues. I recently hung a shelf in my kitchen, and hanging it level reveals that in a 6-foot span my ceiling is 2 inches lower on one side than the other. I'm afraid to say anything because I don't want to jeopardize my housing voucher for being a problematic tenant. I have zero pull in this situation. The local taxpayers do though. They are the ones paying the market rate rent on these units. The public naively believes that the city inspections insure that these are safe apartments to house the city's most vulnerable people – mostly vets and people born with severe disabilities, or people like me who are dying, cannot work and spent all of my assets on medical expenses until I was literally worth less than $1400 and qualified for Medical, food and housing assistance. The taxpayers are paying off the landlord's mortgage and the housing authority is so underfunded for staffing it's impossible for them to do anything beyond getting people in serious need off of a long wait-list and into housing. Building failures like this are a very real possibility all over the country. Taxpayers resent supporting the vulnerable population and don't vote to fund this situation adequately, but they are still contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to housing assistance, and hold the power to do something. By the time a person lives in section 8 housing their cries are discounted if not simply ignored.
just yesterday he was hastily pressing forward with demolition. WTF is wrong with this man?!? How did he ever get placed in a position to make these kinds of potentially devestating and deadly decisions?!? There's literally no excuse. I'm in Denver, CO and knew more about who was and is unaccounted for than the people moving forward with demolition today.
I helped build that building. The area that collapsed is where I was putting rivets into steel supports. I ran low on 419 rivets and skipped every other rivet hole to get done. I thought it should be fine, but I guess not. Sorry about that. Anyway, the rest of the building got enough rivets and shouldn't collapse. Sorry again. Really…
Maybe they should see if Chicago or New York could sent help. Not saying that Iowa isn't doing a good job but how many tall buildings are in Iowa. Good they didn't start tearing the building like they were going to. I don't want to see rescuers get hurt but to give up as easy as they wanted too makes no sense.

I live in Davenport..the problem is inspectors should be charged..im pretty sure its section 8 housing so it had to be inspected..then it went from everyone was ok to 5 people unaccounted for thats why people are upset

Secondly the family of another victim of this tragedy was available to speak but only 1 of the 2 families were allowed to address the cameras… 1 family was white (shown in the video). Any guesses about the family who DIDN'T get to? If you guessed not white you were right…. but I am sure that was just an oversight on the part of the "officials" involved.
Also lest you get confused and think I am not qualified to discuss this I can tell you I lived for a summer down the street from this building (in "The Schricker", for those who live in town) and MANY of the buildings in that area are….problematic. Yet the city does nothing. They rarely pay anything more than passing lip service to complaints about the buildings.
So glad I left Davenport when I did.

Yesterday morning this shifty looking mayor was brushing off the idea that it was too soon to stop searching for survivors. He acted like the very question was foolish and the building needed to be demolished immediately without further searching. What a clown politician to be so two faced right now and not apologize for his previous callous disregard for residents.
After the massive collapse in Florida a couple years back, every politician in America should have updated their building code laws. This shouldn't keep happening
