Republicans have decided to become political domestic terrorists and are blatantly using the debt ceiling to hold Social Security and Medicare hostage in an effort to force President Biden to negotiate with terrorists. They're playing political chess with the goal of blaming the economic destruction on President Biden in 2024. They're very aware that the current debt is because of Trump as well as the tax cuts they gave to the rich. You cannot solve the debt of the U.S. by just cutting spending. You must raise taxes.
There is good and bad debt depending on whether the funds are used to increase productivity such as the Chps act that will spur investment in semi-conductors as opposed to debt that finances more unnecessary consumption especially by the wealthy.
Senate Leader Schumer is right. He knows Republicans are walking into a dead-end alley with the spending cuts approach and will get pounded mercilessly by the media. Same of movie, we knows how it ends. Republicans must innovate here. All they have to do is attach a provision to raising the debt ceiling that prohibits the Federal Reserve from purchasing US government debt (US Treasury bonds, notes). This will allow the free market to decide if spending cuts are required, because the free market will have to fund the deficit and debt.

Debt is run by households and corporations much larger than federal govt debt and yet there is no handwringing over that.
The Debt Ceiling debates are where Republicans pretend that they're fiscally conservative. They're not. Neither part is, and that's how we got here. Both parties are responsible for the trajectory of America's National Debt. These debates are a meaningless political exercise.
When Obama was a SEnator he voted against raising the debt ceiling saying it was "Immoral" to do so. As President he said it was absolutely necessay to raise the debt ceiling because we had to pay bills we created. It is the time to talk about budget cuts because the debt ceiling is the one way to curb spending. And for the fools in the room there are laws that say Social Security will be paid and I assure you there will be no defaults.
Funding bills are supposed to be specific so that the representatives vote on whether the funding is proper and appropriate. Omnibus appropriations allows too many special interests to be funded at the expense of taxpayers's interests. There was a time that Congress itself proposed to eliminate "earmarks" but they are back more than ever. Democrats especially do not want "cuts" to omnibus spending bills that they have worked so hard to get past the members who want to reduce spending.
Here's a solution, EVERY spending bill will prioritize the individual spending measures in the bill and the measures with the lowest priorities get cut until the total spending meets the total revenue allocated. Of course we have to repay the debt so the total budget must include measures to repay the debt, perhaps within 30 years like a mortgage. Also, there would ideally be a set-aside emergency fund (to rollover year to year) but it will not be accessible except in case of national emergency.
For instance, Biden should never have been permitted to deplete the strategic oil reserve for two reasons: (1) oil prices were NOT high historically, and (2) there were other measures that would have reduced the price of gasoline, such as re-opening the US to oil and gas consumption and exploration the Biden CHOSE to ignore for political party reasons.
Making money is an action. Keeping money is behavior, but “growing money is wisdom”. I found this out a week ago after getting a $10,000 return on my $3,000 investment in 7 days.

Republicans raised the debt ceiling three times during the Trump administration with no fuss at all. They never felt it necessary to try to persuade Trump to cut spending, and the Freedom Caucus didn't utter a peep as he massively increased the deficit. The whole idea of a debt ceiling debate every year is enormously stupid. Just have a yearly debate on budget and spending for the next year, vs the projected tax revenue for that year. Like other civilized countries do.

Yes, America's debt problems is only a problem when the Democrats are controlling the White House and Senate. It's never a problem to loosely spend when the Russian-GOP controls the WH, Senate and HOR. We never hear anything about the debt ceiling when the Russian-GOP is controlling the government.
