The pilot that jumped loved flying… he apparently didn't truly understand the concept of needing a plane to fly.

That is odd without a parachute. There is an episode of Superman where he jumps out of an airplane and returns a few minutes later. Maybe the guy saw that episode. As a kid I used to tie a towel around my neck and jump from the top of the bureau and onto my bed pretending I was Superman, but never out of an airplane. I wonder if he at least tied a towel around his neck..
