Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy started a Conviction Integrity Unit three years ago to examine claims of innocence and look for those who are wrongfully imprisoned. That means investigating the work of her own office. “It’s not about us. It’s about justice,” Worthy tells NBC News’ Kate Snow. The unit has helped 29 people so far, making it stand out among a growing number of CIUs across the country. Kevin Harrington is one of them. As a college student, Harrington was arrested on a murder charge and thought he’d be quickly released when authorities realized their mistake. It took almost 18 years. Harrington says he was apprehensive at first when the Wayne County CIU began looking into his case, as that prosecutor’s office put him in prison. Now he’s working to bring about change.
