Republican officials have asked for the removal of a Pride flag flying at the Biloxi, Mississippi, Veterans Affairs health clinic and protesters are calling the flag a division. But a spokesperson for the VA says LGBTQ veterans should be welcomed at the VA. WXXV’s Ansley Brant reports.

Everything is supposed to fall under the American flag. The freedoms to express yourself as someone apart of the LGBTQ community is included in that whether people are for or against. That’s the meaning of being American. Putting a distinct flag as an equal to it is why it’s disrespectful. It’s trying to make a statement and it brings fairness into question. The American flag as said before is supposed to be the representation of all our rights and freedoms. Are we supposed to just hang every flag of a demographic now so people don’t feel excluded? No, that would be ridiculous and the American flag is already supposed to do that. My personal conclusion is that it undermines the flag and any other group now that feels that they too should have a voice that’s separate from the American flag isn’t treated equally and that is why it’s divisive. Instead of a symbol for one, us , the American people. We will put up what 1,5,10,20+ flags to have everyone feel specially inclusive. I don’t think so and diversity to that extent isn’t good for the cohesion of the country. When you see that red, white , and blue you should also see those pride colors symbolically woven in the threads with every other struggle we have faced as citizens of this country.
