It is incredibly heartbreaking in war, especially with innocent people who are really just trying to escape. I have seen photos from the east as well that are horrifying and interviews that convey so much pain that we cannot imagine sitting from the comfort of our homes.
That said, we need to look at nuance.
Iraq's population was 23million in 2000 and they had 1.2 million casualties. Ukraine's population is 43 million, nearly double that amount. Civilian casualties are significantly lower. If civilian deaths were intentional on the grand scale, as they say, it would be a different story. That is NOT to say that it's impossible that individual soldiers fired carelessly or indiscriminately, but civilians are not the target. Each case has to be investigated individually. Unfortunately, with the civil mess in Ukraine also, it is impossible not to have casualties. This is why any sane person is against war.
But it also makes zero sense for Russia to fire at fleeing civilians. Think about it. How would Russia benefit from this exactly? And also, if it wanted to do so, why didn't it just carpet bomb absolutely everything and everyone from Day 1? It would have saved an enormous amount of time but also countless Russian soldiers' lives.
I'm not discounting that there could be hateful individuals in Russia's army who are capable of this, but I highly doubt this is a national order. Too much does not make sense. I'm truly sorry. I do not condone this invasion. It tugs at the heartstrings (as it should, for anyone with humanity left in them) but too many things do not add up with the mainstream media narrative.

Richard, you are very brave. Please get out of there ASAP. Once the refugee corridor is closed, people who stay will be considered as combatants by the Russian army. They will then initiate heavy bombardment to wipe out resistance as much as they can, this way they can minimize their own causality. Similar tactics were applied by the American troops in the middle east.
