Residents of Sanibel Island, who returned to their neighborhoods after Hurricane Ian, described the scene as “unrecognizable” as recovery efforts are underway. Sanibel Mayor Holly Smith says, “Right now … it’s almost being handled like a war mission.

Materials are going to be going up big time under this criminal president. Better hurry
Of course you would rebuild a wiped out city! start the clock on how long until the next one. Putting lives at risk, polluting oceans more, wasting money. Good Job!
With the affect of global warming getting worse, the Federal gov’t needs to change its policy by not funding emergency relief to those who refuse to move from islands and the coastlines. There should be a state and federal buyout program and change the land to conservation areas or public parks.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create "EVIL" I the Lord do all these things.
I worked as a city planner on Sanibel 42 years ago. Even then, the city had strict development and building codes and regulations. That couldn't make up for the poorly planned and built older homes and other existing development, but the city tried. Yet, see what happened with Ian and, in addition, the causeway is seriously damaged. Sanibel is a barrier island. Nothing will change that until rising sea levels obliterate it.
How will that happen when 70% lost everything including their jobs???
Let’s turn it into Sanibel National Park. Mostly wild, with a few exhibits showing that people used to be crazy enough to build dnd live on flood prone barrier islands
Her shirt looks like a hospital gown. I thought she was a patient who'd been injured. Very confusing.
I'm all for rebuilding the city of Sanibel, just not on a barrier island. Look at the devastation there. It is not a suitable place for human habitation. Every dollar spent on any of the barrier islands is a dollar wasted. Eventually, in the not too distant future, climate change will sink all those islands into the sea.
Government should buy everybody out and turn it into a nature reserve. Rebuilding in a hurricane zone at sea level as climate change ramps up is doomed to fail.
This is a barrier island and should never been developed. Clear the debris and return it to nature.
Many people consider Florida as their homestead destination. No thank you, too susceptible to this kind of carnage.
Make sure it includes all of your current residents. Don’t gentrify!
😢😢😢
We already have a insurance crisis in Florida. So when these morons say they will rebuild it's tragic. The rich can afford the escalating rates. People won't evacuate of course they'll rebuild. 😳😳😳
Wow great answers mayor 👍 you can feel the positive vibe coming from her
Mayors DO NOT have authority when it comes to rebuilding in a flood hazard zone. It is up to the state and federal government to work things out.
I was there in the eye of this storm filming I knew it was going to be horrible God bless
I live inland up on Rattlesnake hill I don't have to worry about any water issues I don't wanna throw off on anyone but anywhere else besides the Bach Tower , Florida Ridge or maybe the Florida prairie you're at risk .
Clean up, see what left, rebuild infrastructure to with stand a category 5. All the costal States and the federal government need to work closely to gether to prepare to survive
New day and new city
It is not to easy to move out as nobody wants to buy their damaged properties or lands so , very often, the cheapest solution is to rebuild a new house where they lived. I know it because my friend needed to rebuild their house where their old house was burnt due to a wildfire in California. Prayers to all those who are suffering.
Maybe the next one will take out more people and there will be no one to rebuild. Nature will take back what we do to the earth.
How unlucky presidente he is such a painful moments for him .Frist covid 19,seconds ukrine war now this types of natural disaster such a bad luck for him .which is so harmful emotionally & mentality also .I think he was born for servings to monkey human beings. SPECALLY MADE FROM GOD TO SERVE MONKEY HUMMAN BEINGS.
They give no thought to the psychological health of the first responders that have to recover drowned bloated corpses year after year, do they?
Use your own money not federal taxpayers money.
