This reporting drives me nuts! The sea lions were interacting ONLY with other sea lions. They were NOT charging at beach-goers, not at all! I have never seen a seal or sea lion charge or otherwise approach any human on the beach, ever. The people do sometimes get too close for their own safety, but they are not "harassing" the animals, even when they're taking selfies and are separated by only a few feet. "Harassing" pinnipeds is when people take definitive steps to coral or move the animals, according to the Marine Mammals Protection Act: when people actively hunt them or move them from an area. There are far too many seals and sea lions in this particular area, and these species are overpopulating and over-fishing these beaches near San Diego, possibly causing themselves harm to their immune systems and potentially introducing disease within the population.
There is no "at risk" or "endangered" listing for the population of seals or California Sea Lions. GROW A BRAIN AND STOP HARASSING THE HUMANS WHO WANT TO USE THESE TINY PORTIONS OF BEACH THAT HAVE MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR LIFEGUARD INSTALLATIONS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE PROTECTION OF HUMANS WHILE SWIMMING, SURFING AND RECREATING ON THESE PARTICULAR WATERS, OUT OF THE THOUSANDS OF MILES OF WEST COAST BEACH AREAS, MOST OF WHICH ARE UNUSABLE AND/OR INACCESSIBLE TO HUMANS! Seals and Sea Lions have absolutely no problem with pupping or occupying the many other beaches and rocky areas that humans are unable to use. The shallow-mindedness of activists and news reporters that make these inflammatory and ABSOLUTELY IGNORANT statements that people are harming these wild animals merely by being too close to them, is truly mind-boggling, and likely causing great harm to these animals when they are given human-altered beach areas to overpopulate. #SHMWLOL

Maybe people need to get bitten, with a relocation of the animal that they would pay for, and the stories publicized in order to make others think twice about getting close.
I live in WY and often see people who are unthinking about their actions with regard to large livestock and wildlife. A bull (male cow) is aggressive and the size of a VW Beetle or Bug, a bison is the size and speed of a Subaru Outback, a male moose is bigger than a Ford Ranger pickup. If you wouldn’t take a selfie with a vehicle traveling at speeds 5-35 mph, you may want to rethink your decision to approach the animal.
