At what point does a woman’s egg cell become the states? If a mans personal sperm cell and a woman’s personal egg cell happen to fertilize aren’t both of those cells still theirs? Life is a choice to decide to create. In our society sex and life are disconnected entities. If someone would like to choose not to create life that is their human choice to decide. In the past the choice to HAVE sex was the decision to create life. In the age of contraception sex no longer has the same connotation. To choose to have a child is to decide that you would like to create life, that is a powerful decision that should not and is not taken lightly. Abortion offers the opportunity for someone to really contemplate and decide if they would like to make this choice. This places more weight on the decision. Abortion directly acknowledges the weight and worth of life. If a woman or couple decides to move forward with an abortion they are making the decision that they are not in a position to support life. As the cells that built the life are theirs that choice remains with them. Once a child is self sufficient (meaning it can operate on its own outside of the mother) it now has autonomy and therefore its life is its own. Everyday a mother wakes up and decides to continue with her pregnancy is a decision to continue to support a life. That is beautiful. Anti abortion rhetoric focuses on the idea of murder but fails to acknowledge that for something to be killed it has to be self sufficiently alive first.
