@NBC News — Only the proximal cause is the "saturated ground". Look closer. Look at those root systems. They SHOULD be almost the diameter and depth below ground as the spread and height of the tree above ground. They're not even close. The reason is drought, and years of insufficient DEEP watering. Just like NBC reportage, the quantity and depth are lacking. Also, that's NOT "mud" and "debris". It's TOPSOIL and BIOMASS being washed away towards the bottom of the ocean.

My heart goes out to all of these people dealing with the wrath of Mother Nature. I can't imagine what the mother of that 5 year old is going through. I hope they find him, so she can have closure.
