This is not the officer's job. I'm sure the job was to protect the driver but he didn't.

Never had this happen, but I missed the bus in chicago, they bus saw me and just drove off. But the police saw me and asked me if I want a lift. He took me to see my gf and did the sirens and everything. He even talked on the speaker of his car. Wife and I had a great laugh and a new kind of respect was unlocked.
Don't do anything wrong, they would more than likely work/help you.
However, sheriff's in a certain city in the bay area…maybe cops and sherrifs act differently? I wonder if I can name police departments in cities without trouble…
