Japanese authenticity is great! But don't dare showing European authenticity. That would be racist.
Well, if the producers are aiming for authencity in this series, I guess we should be thankful it wasn't produced by Netflix. Otherwise, they would have gender and race-swapped half of the characters.

I just hope that one day, all the stories that have tried to represent cultures in Hollywood will be retold with the love and dedication that Shogun does it. That way, people in the United States will be able to understand how rich in culture and tradition the world is, and how little they really know about it
after being incredibly disappointed by Masters of the Air on apple tv…im so glad I found this show. Its only been two episodes and It has me hooked like I havent been in a long time. The story the acting, everything is great. This mans scene in episode 2, during the spain-portugal deal converstation was epic!
The novel was written by a white guy. Let’s keep this real, not Hollywood BS. The actors actually eating Japanese food (as reported elsewhere) is not some sort of blessing on the holiness of a project. Actors get into the “up with all actors”, like vapid fundamentalist Christians celebrating how saved they are.

I am so glad Hiroyuki is getting all this mainstream success now , He was known for doing martial art films in the 80's. A favourite i liked of his is "Ninja in the Dragons den" a HK action film. I will definitely check out "Shogun" though. I saw the original mini series when i was kid in the mid 80's and I'm sure this is gonna be 10 times better.

Hiroyuki Sanada seem more interested in building a bridge to let westerners know what authentic Japanese culture is like and how rich it is without westernized portrayal, but Anna Sawai seem more interested in antagonizing western culture, building walls rather than bridges
A foreigner coming to a new land and discovering it's customs is definitely a tired trope when it's a westerner in Japan or China etc, but it could be very interesting to see the reverse. Some Christian converts in Japan sent 3 noble teenage sons of a tour of Europe, and they saw a lot and met kings and the Pope as they grew into young adults, and then returned to a Japan where the political situation had completely changed and their new religion was suddenly extremely taboo and led to a lot of conflict. If I remember correctly they ended up at different sides of the conflict as well, so it would have a lot of potential for dramatic moments

I am Japanese. I believe that the modern "structure of the Japanese language" itself has retained a strong influence from the feudal era to this day, and unlike the English language, it is pecking order-oriented and has serious problems in approaching the world from 「the perspective of equality」 which is essential for democracy.

this is one of my favorites already and i have oly watched 2 episodes…. love it
the lack of subtitles in the original shogun miniseries wasn't "a product of its time" at all, it was done because the story is told from john blackthorn's perspective and, to quote the producers, "what he doesn't understand, we (the audience) don't understand". it had nothing to do with selling japanese culture short, as you imply in this video, it's actually a very clever narrative device that puts you in the shoes of the protagonist. ffs everything's twisted into some commentary on identity now, stop looking for things that aren't there

Okay. Haven’t seen it yet. Waiting to get back to the USA so I can watch it. I’m rereading the novel and was a fan of both it and the 1980s miniseries. I’m seeing things in the clips I’ve seen on YouTube, with the women fighting for example, that I do not recall from my reading and wonder how closely they’ve adhered to the narrative. And, hopefully, haven’t interjected too much contemporary social folderol into the script. If so that will be very disappointing.

What about the Portuguese language. Why was it censored and Englishified???? Japanese vocabulary has lots of Portuguese words, so its an insult to Portuguese & Japanese culture to use English over Portuguese. Nippo Jisho.

Shogun is pronounced as 'show-goon' or shō-gūn
i can see they will have many trophies from awards because this tv series looks like a winner. I've seen old Shogun, the reboot is like clarify up and make it real life. Nothing cheesy or wacko.
Where's the diversity and inclusion?
I grew up in Japan an learning their language and culture. Their language at the time is perfect to the point I can't even understand most of it what their saying. I'm sure these actors and actresses struggle to talk in such olden language.
