Steve Harwell, the founding singer for the early 2000’s band Smash Mouth, passed away after entering hospice care for liver failure, his manager said.

Steve Harwell, the former lead vocalist of rock band Smash Mouth, died Monday at 56. Robert Hayes, a longtime manager of Harwell and the band, confirmed the singer’s death in a statement to USA TODAY.
“Steve Harwell passed away this morning Sept. 4, 2023 at his home in Boise, Idaho. He was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully and comfortably,” Hayes said in a statement.

Stephen Harwell was a real Yankee. He burst into the musical sphere suddenly and swiftly, as he and left this world. His music has forever imprinted in the world history the subculture and atmosphere of the late 1990s, early 2000s. The time of the last rise of the USA before the onset of glamorous stagnation and the global economic crisis.
His band was far from the first and not the only one that tried to revive the classic rocker style of the 1960s, but only Smash Mouth managed to breathe new life into it with their hard work and perseverance.
Stephen, by his strong-willed example, showed that a provincial band can break out of obscurity to worldwide fame through the fiercest competition with music giants, even with a meager budget and cynical self-confidence of others that: «You don't have a single chance!»
He was loved by listeners all over the world and especially in the USA for his eccentric, light, cheerful and driving music and lyrics in which the urban man in the street (cynically called a «gray man») oppressed by the heavy burden of work/study, monotonous life and family troubles, broke out of social shackles and rushed into a carefree, adventurous journey whose ultimate goal there was an achievement of spiritual harmony.
Unlike Hollywood actors who make faces in front of the media and hypocritical politicians, from whose dirty mouths only nonsense often comes out, Stephen Harwell and Smash Mouth, not in theory, but in practice, raised the prestige of the USA all over the world, their creativity stimulated the interest of hundreds of millions of people around the planet in studying American alternative music, diverse and vibrant subcultures, English language.
Harwell was not killed by drugs or alcohol (these are only secondary causes, a consequence), Stephen was killed by Modern America with its overwhelming cynicism, contempt for human life, hedonism, mass dilettantism that penetrated into all spheres of life and a love of bad taste (in movies, in music, in fashion, in design, in architecture, etc.)
As you know, human experience is the best example for studying «other people's mistakes». Stephen made only one miscalculation, he did not want to part with his favorite brainchild – Smash Mouth. He incorrectly believed that the band would be able to survive a difficult period and open a second wind, but the time of this project is inexorably gone. The new time required a sharp change of scenery, getting new impressions, and therefore inspiration for writing new music. Unfortunately, this did not happen. Harvell plunged into a creative crisis, which resulted in depression, which he decided to «treat» with alcohol. Modern underground musicians should consider his mistake.
Despite the image of Stephen as a bully and a ringleader at parties, his music was imbued with the spirit of romanticism, which reflected a sincere, pure and touching love for a woman and unusual sights of California in particular and the USA in general.
His departure is a significant loss for informals and music lovers. On the metaphorical chessboard of world music, there is one less white figure, and unfortunately there is one more twerking ass of an immoral dancer performing in a banal, and secondary clip of template rapper, more.

According to the New York Times, Harwell suffered from cardiomyopathy, end stage liver disease, and Wernicke's encephalopathy. (Wenicke's encephalopathy is a kind of dementia that targets speech and memory. These are the people who totally lose their short term memory, like the guy in Memento. Every 10 seconds, they are asking "Who are you? Where did you come from?") Every doctor and nurse knows that those three conditions together indicate heavy alcohol abuse. 100%. Booze killed him. Yet the NYTimes didn't mention it, this video didn't mention it, no one is mentioning that Harwell drank himself to an early and disabled death. Why? Who are the media protecting?

I grew up in the time that you actually had to watch mtv to see your favorite videos so essentially it watched it all day to see a handful of videos. I got to see artists that I’d never listen to on my own and became appreciative off all genres of music. Smash mouth wasn’t my type of music, but I learned to love them and will still jam out to All Star. Thanks Steve for being a part of my childhood.

I worked security front stage last year at a festival in Jacksonville Beach Florida at the Seawalk Pavilion! Smash Mouth performed! The band interacted with the crowd taking selfies and signing autographs with anyone who wanted one! It was a great concert! Wonderful performance! Sad to hear this news! 😢
