Ok, so, I didn't go to college. Also, we paid off my husband's student loans. I'd like my mortgage forgiven then. This is where this goes. My mortgage was a predatory 5 yr arm loan. But, that won't happen. These loan holders need to pay their debt just like the rest of us.
Why are the students being talked about more special than students who came before them? Students who many have taken out loans to attend college and paid back those loans.
They may not have been in any better position than students today, but they managed to pay back what they borrowed.
Where could this lead if the SCOUS upheld student loan forgiveness? Will these same students then expect every future loan to be forgiven because they're in a financial bind? Will the cry of what's good for the goose is good for the gander be heard, and others start demanding their loans be forgiven? Or lawsuits filed for reimbursement to those who've paid off their student loans?
When a person takes out a loan, the paper(s) they sign is a promise to repay the loan. If a person knows they'll not be able to repay a loan, then they should never apply for a loan or sign the paper(s) promising to repay the loan.
Here's another thought. If/when they apply for future loans, a financial background check will be done to make sure that person is a good credit risk. If it's learned they had their student loan paid off by the Feds, will they then be thought of as a credit risk? If they couldn't pay off one loan, why would a lending institution want to risk their money on that person?

Let's be honest, responsible, and fair to all Americans about this issue of Student Loans:
Realistically, with the BILLIONS of $$$ that Colleges/Universities have amassed, tax-free, as ENDOWMENTS and GRANTS, these Colleges, and Universities should step up and bear responsibility for this debt…not the hard-working American taxpayer.
After all, these institutions SOLD these indebted students a bill of goods with some worthless majors/programs…just to keep their cronies, friends, political activists, and radicals "Extremely Well Paid" and employed for life.
Why should the hard-working, American taxpayers be responsible for the debts of these students due to "POOR" decision-making?
I am sure these students, while still in High School, were advised, WELL IN ADVANCE, by Guidance Counselors, social workers, faculty, and parents that some of these unproductive career choices, would not provide them the ability to become independent and earn a living salary…in the real world. We have free will to make our own choices…and take responsibility for our actions.

What is fair about this Student Loan bailout? It is restricted only to "Government Loans!" Private Loans are not included. 1. When borrowing money to go to school, financial aid offices fail to disclose which are government loans, and which are private loans. 2. They even fail to perform a Regulation Z disclosure. This puts the student, in a since, under duress! Either get the loan or drop the classes. An interesting fact to consider is that most lending institutions are for profit. They risk going out of business, in order to make a profit. Even on their taxes, they declare that all of their money is "AT RISK." Under the G.W. Bush Administration, in 08-09, Congress passed the $700B Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP.) This was commonly known as the bank bailout, along with GM and Chrysler. Bush did not just sign an executive order; Congress had to be convinced to pass a bill, (checks and balances) Additionally, most of the bailout $ went to "deferred executive bonuses," as a "valid debt," for doing what, such a great job? Either include all types of loans, or negotiate something fair to everyone.

Simple fix if you want student loan forgiveness then you pay for it anyone who want it then you wont receive a tax return until its all paid back plus 100 dollars comes out of each of your pay checks all year until all is paid back regular tax payers should have to pay for any of it

Nobody paid for my school but me…and I paid it on a p/t job making 7.90 an hour in a bowling alley. 2 years I slept on a sofa and went to school. In the end I paid about $7,200 …that was 1987 – 90.
