Whether the conviction here is on first degree murder or a lower degree of homicide will boil down to what the prosecution can prove on intent. If they let him continue speaking, it would have been easier to determine the intent. Indeed, his statements would've likely been sufficient to counter what the main defense in this case will be: "heat of passion."
There would, of course, be nothing wrong in allowing him to voluntarily respond to reporter questions. There would be a Sixth Amendment violation if state investigators or interrogators asked questions after he retained counsel. But reporters aren't state agents.

I guess he was being blackmailed with something serious or believed would bring dishonor to his family so he considered murder a lesser dishonor or things got out of hand. Either way nothing justifies murder other than self defense or accident.
