Teens Under Pressure: Mental Health & Social Media

We are facing a serious mental health crisis with teens under pressure like never before. In this NBC News Now Special we provide insight beyond the statistics by examining the causes of this crisis, what role social media is playing and what can be done to help young people. In “Teens Under Pressure: Mental Health & Social Media”, Savannah Sellers talks to a group of teens from Fairfax County, Virginia and speaks with the Education Secretary and Surgeon General who says, “youth mental health is a full-blown crisis in our country right now” and that better enforcement of social media age restrictions is needed.

  1. Really pleased to see such a thorough report on this.
Research and understanding is finally catching up to what we learned in 2011, the year we struggled to save our beautiful and previously joyful child Grace McComas. We lost her to suicide on Easter 2012 at age 15 after an univestigated drug-assisted sexual assault by an older neighbor, followed by malicious, death-wishing and hate filled cyberbullying. (She never had a smartphone, and wasn't even on Twitter but didn't need to be to hear/see what was said).
We knew EXACTLY what was happening and took screenshot proof to schools, police and courts who failed to make it stop.
Maryland's Grace's Law Against Cyberbullying was passed in 2013 and updated in 2017.
MD legislation to up privacy and protections online, #MDKidsCode is being discussed now. Federal legislation, Kids Online Safety Act or KOSA, stalled on Capitol Hill last year, but mom's who have lost children to online harms will fight for it again. There's simply no time to wait.

  2. Great, what did you think would happen with 6 catholics on the Scotus?

That we would progress into the future? Good grief, the me 2 movement is almost dead while roe V wade was overturned and they're even trying to prevent access to contraceptives

  3. social media is the breeder of ALL these problems.

  4. "Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out." -John Wooden

  5. How about tablets no different than smart phones.

  6. Terrible parents allow their kids with a smart phone, go back to flip phones while they are young

  7. The cell phones and some "bad applications" are BADLING disrupting the students education/behavior 100%. Also some of the parents are responsible for this because of their "BLINDES TO SEE THIS AND CORRECT THEM TO BECOME SOMEBODY TOMORROWS FOR THEIR OWN GOOD AND THE WELL BEING OF THE COUNTRY.

  8. Fortresa is pushing propaganda.

  9. The minimum age should be 19. All social media should be banned for anyone 18 and under.

  10. I think that all high school kids, throughout history, have probably suffered from some social and mental health issues. The fact that HS kids are starting to identify, discuss, and cope with them this early on, may make for easier futures.

  11. Their biggest pressure is from being brainwashed in the school system

  12. Ban Eugenia Cooney from social media. Watching my own teens it seems like she alone is half the problem as far as body image and girls hating themselves.

  13. Sad to hear the news about this. It boils down to children learning to cope in an age where parents are focused on culture wars and not their kids.

A lot of these kids are quoting from stuff they read online. They are not qualified to address mental health on their own.

  14. I am so lucky that I graduated high school. They added so many test after I went to university. Staar test, exist exam, Ged exam, Sat, Act Bla Bla Bla

  15. AS A FORMER TEACHER? STOP LYING TO THESE CHILDREN ABOUT LIFE, HISTORY AND THE WORLD! START LISTENING TO THEM..AND REALLY LISTEN PARENTS! STOP MAKING THEM TAKE TESTS THAT ADULT HUMANS CAN'T PASS. CRACK DOWN ON BULLYING. STOP RACISM IN SCHOOLS. START PUTTING YOUR WHOLE FAMILY IN THERAPY. THIS ALL WAS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN WE TOOK OUT GREAT PRINCIPLES AND TEACHERS WHO CARED ABOUT OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR FIELD. NOW? IT IS ABOUT MONEY, POLITICS AND TEST SCORES. SMH SAD..BUT I KNEW THIS DAY WOULD COME. HERE IT IS. I FEEL SORRY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

  16. This is very true. Everyone in our family friends circle of kids who are in high school are experiencing mental health problems. It is an epidemic.
