The "massive search" efforts seemed a bit misguided at the outset to this casual observer, if you consider we knew the intended destination of that submersible. It was going down towards a specific location. And that was the Titanic wreck site. The most obvious and likely place to check for that submersible in the firstly place, besides the surface area in the immediate area around the drop site.
